Howdy, it's been a while since I last tried a challenge run. I'll be going through Pokemon X and using only the Dragon type. All standard rules apply, I'm not allowed to use Mega Evolution or legendaries which means that Zygarde is off the table. I won't be using the experience share, and Super Training is also disallowed. I can and will nickname every member of my six pokemon team as I catch them. Although I might not use a naming theme. My trainer will be named Draco, Latin for Dragon. Now without further ado let's get on with the show.

After a long and frankly boring chat with the professor, getting dressed, and talking to mom, I finally set out for my goal of being the next great dragon tamer. I met Serena and Shauna immediately after leaving my house, apparently the professor sent them to get me or something. Strange. When introduced to Tierno and Trevor, I had witnessed the most awkward nicknaming session ever. In the end, I told them to call me by my eventual trainer class as that's just easier on all of us. I was then given a choice of starter, none of them were dragon types so it didn't matter. I selected Fennekin because fire at least seems dragon like. I was given some odd letter to take home to mom, it was signed by Professor Sycamore. I guess he's a Rhyhorn racing fan. As I was leaving with odd fanmail in hand, I was challenged to a battle by Shauna. And because I can't say no to a challenge, I was forced to use Fennekin. With two embers, Shauna's Chespin went down. Fennekin may not be a dragon, but he will suffice until I can find one. Gave my mom Sycamore's fan-letter, said goodbye to Rhyhorn, and set off toward Santalune Forest. Apparently Serena thought I needed to be taught how to catch pokemon... The fact that she's underestimating me is a little infuriating. No dragons on route 2, moving on. Made it to Santalune Forest, no dragons are here. Eventually I'll have dragons for my team.

Fennekin (AKA Stand-in)
:fennekin: Moves: Scratch, Tail Whip, and Ember.

Howdy ya'll here again. Just a reminder: Feed back is always appreciated. Not like it matters, we're still lacking in dragons at the moment.

On the trek through Santalune Forest toward stardom, I encountered many non dragon pokemon. Including, interestingly enough, a shiny pikachu which while adorable is going to sit in a PC box for the rest of eternity. After making it out, skipping as many trainer battles as I could so that when I get dragons I'll have a nice place to train them, I made my way toward the Santalune gym. Battled some rollerskating fanatic and got a pair of roller-skates in return. Entered the gym and battled all gym trainers, apparently their contract states that they can't battle you after you've beaten the gym leader. Got to Viola, whose surskit gave Fennekin some trouble but not much. Defeated her and got my first Kalos badge. Went to Lumiose while avoiding every trainer battle I could for the same reason as in the forest. Battled Sycamore, lost, got Charmander, and met some guy named Lysandre... His hair resembled a lion's mane. Went to a cafe with Serena, thought we were going to get something to eat, but instead we just listened to Lysandre and Diantha chat. Moved on to route 5. Nothing even vaguely draconic on route five. went to Camphrier town, visited the castle and found Shauna. Nice as it was to see her, we were then informed of a problem on route seven. A snorlax decided to take a nap on the bridge. Actually I heard that had been a common occurrence back in Kanto too, I guess Snorlax are just drawn to bridges. Any way, Shauna and I were then informed that we needed to get a special item back from the rich guy who'd borrowed it. I told Shauna I'd need to sit down for a while, every trainer needs a break once in a while. Next time, we'll see about getting that artifact.

Haven't updated in a while. When last we left our Hero? Dragon obsessed protagonist, he'd been told of a powerful artifact that he had to obtain... Okay, it's the Pokeflute and it's actually rather pathetic compared to other items (broken EXP. Share not withstanding)... From the rich guy that borrowed it. Will he succeed? Will there finally be dragons? Will anyone shut me up? Find out now on The X-citing Drag-On Adventure.

So after walking up a long, boring path filled with trainers I refuse to battle until I have dragons. I found Parfum Palace, had to pay the butler to get in. Shauna wouldn't shut up about how beautiful it was. Still no dragons there, so worthless. Apparently the owner's furfrou had run away and hidden in the maze... I can only imagine how he's mistreating that thing if it's first instinct is to escape to the maze. After solving his problem, because I guess everyone just thinks that random trainers are miracle workers, we went up stairs and watched fireworks... Or at least we would have, someone must have forgotten to inform the owner that fireworks are most visible at night. And yet Shauna said they were beautiful, although at least in this instance, I think she was just being polite. On the way back to the Snorlax, the fennekin evolved. After dealing with that thing... By which I mean running. I was challenged to a battle by Tierno and Trevor, and because Serena didn't think I'd be able to handle it on my own she battled by my side.

After the battle, I went through Connecting Cave. And wouldn't you know it I found an Axew! My first dragon pokemon. I named him Vlad Tepes and made my way back to Camphrier to put Braixen in the PC. On the other side of the cave, I stopped and searched for another dragon. And was rewarded with a Bagon. I'll call her Volvagia. And then as I was getting to Ambrette town, Serena shouted something at me about the fossil research lab. After being told that one of the scientists was in the Glittering Cave and hadn't come back, we were basically sent on a rescue mission. Before anyone asks, Route 9 had no dragons, believe me I searched thoroughly. After running through the cave, and meeting the garishly dressed Team Flare... Seriously red suits don't look good. Battled my way past them and found the scientist... Who's dilemma was that he couldn't choose between two fossils. Why were we sent out for this again? He gave us both a choice, I took the jaw fossil and Serena took the Sail fossil. Then we went back to Ambrette and revived the fossils. I've got a wonderful Tyrunt now, I think I'll call her Carmilla.

Just a reminder, I'm playing on X and can't trade due to needing to update first. Even if I could trade, I'm not going to, at least not yet.

After arriving in Cyllage City, I took some time to shop. Bought some new clothes and got a free bike. After a long string of difficult battles, which I might have been better prepared for if I'd chosen to be a Water specialist, and one hell of a climb towards the Gym Leader's perch. I battled Grant... And subsequently lost, twice, before deciding to go do more training. Once that was done, I went back and defeated Grant. Although Carmilla fainted in the process. With a new badge in hand and several Dragon Rages, Bites, and Dual Chops expended, I faced my most difficult battle yet... Acrophobia. After climbing back down to Terrafirma, I left the gym ready to head on toward Route 10. And faced another Team Flare member... Why do they insist on wasting my time?

Getting that shiny Pikachu, you lucky so-and-so. I couldn't even catch a normal Pikachu.

I guess the no Megas rule meant you couldn't keep Charmander, shame. Still, the team's shaping up nicely. I used an Axew in my first run of BW (forgot which), it's a beast when it evolves to Haxorus.

Here's to all the Fairy types meeting a horrible end.

@icelandic Yeah, I couldn't believe I got so lucky. Wish I could have kept Charmander, but mega evolving makes the game less challenging. As for Axew, it's going to be hard to raise (like all dragon types) but in the end it's worth it. I'm actually thinking about doing a Nuzlocke on Black/White at some point in the future. Challenges allow me to stretch my writing muscles, while also adding a layer of surprise both for me and the audience. In this case, I'm surprised by how difficult the game is with a team of dragons. I actually thought this would be an easier challenge.

Beat the Team Flare grunt with some difficulty. Kept battling more. No dragons on the way to Geosenge. Unfortunately. Once in Geosenge, actually my second time in Geosenge due to training before the gym battle, I found another grunt that ran towards a collection of large stones to the north west. Somehow he got away, I don't know how but I'm no hero so it's not my problem. I set out from Geosenge, got beaten in battle a couple times. Traded with a guy who got a Skrelp (named Haku) from another guy in Hoenn, gave away the shiny pikachu which from what I hear is now in Hoenn. And set forth again from Geosenge. Got through the reflection cave, with a lot more trouble than I'd expected. Fortunately despite all the fainting and giving people money, most of my team managed to get up level 30 by the end of it. Met with the Mega Evolution specialist in the Tower of Mastery. Battled Serena, lost a couple times and eventually defeated her. Now I'm just going to go train for my next gym battle, I don't want to be trounced again.

Don't worry about the shiny. I traded with a friend and then had it traded over to my copy of Omega Ruby. It's safe and sound. I caught the Skrelp on my Omega Ruby file, where I store everything (and I'm never doing a challenge on Omega Ruby because of that). Named it Haku (yes, I like Spirited Away) because I ended up using something of a naming theme, Carmilla being an exception.

Yeah I would have tipped Dragon as a strong type too. But I guess thinking about it, although most fully-evolved dragons are powerful that's not the case so much for their unevolved forms, and they take ages to evolve too. Plus no Exp share makes XY no longer such an easy ride. Once those dragons find their true power, though ...

@icelandic Yeah, I think the late evolutions are what makes Dragon not as strong a type. I mean, I love dragons but they're more of a late game type... By which I mean they generally won't be very good until late game.

@sanianisa Yeah, isn't it just wonderful... I don't plan on trading anything else though. The rest of my team will be caught in X. Thank goodness I haven't disallowed items in battle, this run would be more painfully slow if that were the case.

After training for a while, we made our way to the Shalour City Gym... Fought several strong fighting type trainers, nearly party wiped a couple times. Now, I must admit I love my roller skates. They're useless in the grass, but I love having them. Imagine the look of joy on my face when I found out this gym revolved around skating! By the time I'd finished facing the standard Gym trainers, a rail had appeared from the floor allowing access to the center. I would now battle Korrina officially. We won, through switching almost constantly and using potions while also making use of same type attack bonus.

With Korrina's first defeat at my hands, we made our way up to the top of the Tower of Mastery... Dammit I hate being this far up. Where Korrina forced me to use a Lucario (and Mega Evolve it) against my will. Ugh, After losing twice... Once without mega evolving and once with, she realized that forcing this non-dragon on me was getting her nowhere and decided to let me go. I kept the Lucario, because it seemed to like me for some ungodly reason, And I placed it in the PC, because it's useless to me.

With Korrina out of the way, I made tracks for Coumarine City. As I made my way out of Shalour and toward route 12 however, I was stopped by Serena. She told me that because of the water separating the Shalour side of route twelve and the Coumarine side, I'd need Surf. Taught it to Haku, because he's the only member of the team who can learn it, and set off. Route twelve has no dragons and relatively few trainers. Nothing of note happened here, no one evolved.

Ah, beautiful Coumarine City. Where I immediately talked to a fisher and got a good rod, now I've got what I need for a Dratini. And then I found out there were two halves to this city, separated by train. Which half you're in really doesn't matter, it's a scenic sea-side town regardless. I bought some more healing items and made my way toward the gym. With Haku and Volvagia this gym would have been a simple cake walk. Although every so often Haku would faint and I'd have to use Vlad instead. Honestly this gym looks very similar to Grant's and I'm sick of towers. I'll write the rest of this after the battle.

Beat Ramos, Vlad is only four levels away from evolution. He's kind of starting to get ahead of everyone else. There was a battle with Serena before the gym, apparently she hadn't heard of my distaste for Mega Evolution and wanted me to show her how it worked. We did defeat her rather easily this time. I'm now halfway through this stupid Pokemon League challenge thing, but maybe they'll see my worth and let me be a gym leader at some point. We set out for route thirteen, and now I'll take a break to get the rest of the team caught up to Vlad. Haku's only one level behind him, so more focus should be on the gals.

I'm an idiot and forgot to put the team's levels and moves in. Thank goodness I remembered before I went level grinding.

You are getting there. Seems like Korrina gave you trouble.
I'm sure you are already aware, but you can find Dratini on Route 21. That's also were the Move Tutor for Draco Meteor is.

@Bunnie Yeah, I'm having fun with it. I used to spend my free time writing short stories and stuff of that sort, so this is actually helping me get back into the swing of things. Draco's personality is slightly based on my own... Specifically the fear of heights.

@Greninjaman Yeah, Korrina is tough. I've got bulbapedia open in another tab just so I know what pokemon are available to me and what routes to find them on. Completely forgot about the Draco Meteor Move Tutor though, thanks for the reminder.

Route 13 has a couple dragons and, having run into both species, it was a tough choice as to which one I'd catch. Gible is so cute, so is Trapinch. After several encounters while level grinding I eventually decided on Trapinch. Caught a female one and named her Daenerys. She spent most of our level up session in the back of the party. So I ended up being recruited to figure out what was going on at the power plant. I could have guessed it was Team Flare, honestly I seem to be the only one tasked with defeating these garishly dressed punks.

Fought my way through the power plant with relatively little trouble, once the majority of the party had caught up to Vlad I started switching Daenerys in and out of battle. Fought a nameless admin, little surprising that he didn't give his name. His outfit was less bad than the rest of Team Flare, being a white outfit with sunglasses and an orange bow tie. And then I fought the scientist he was working with, said her name was Aliana... Finally identification for a member of their gang.

Apparently they were siphoning electricity from Lumiose. Apparently there was a blackout earlier that I'd been unaware of and this was the cause. Funny what you don't notice when you're not really walking off the beaten path. Walked back to Lumiose and saw the Prism Tower with Shauna, apparently it houses the gym as well as being a very pretty landmark. In front of the gym were the Gym Leader and his sister, both were nice enough. I walked into Prism Tower and rode the elevator up.

Clemont's gym was built around trivia, which reminded me of stories my mom had told me about Kanto gyms. The trivia questions were rather easy and had no challenge outside of battling one person when you gave the right answer. When I realized that, I decided to do what any sane trainer would... And actively fail the quizzes multiple times just so I could battle all three people in front of each set of elevators. During this process Daenerys evolved into a Vibrava. When we got to Clemont, Daenerys started having trouble but with a little help from Carmilla... We lost. I tried again with more potions and revives. The second time through we won. Then I went to a café to meet up with Professor Sycamore and Lysandre. After a conversation full of red flags that just seemed to scream "I Lead Team Flare", I was told via Hololink that I was to meet my friends out on route fourteen.

Another pokedex comparison with Trevor, another pointless battle against Serena. With that done, I was told to catch up to everyone at the spooky house. I had the option of getting a Goomy here, but didn't run into one and besides I'm holding out for a dratini as the last member of my team. At the spooky house we heard a rather lackluster ghost story, I decided to tip him with a thousand Poké because even though it wasn't for me some of my friends seemed to enjoy it.

Continuing our trek my team and I, along with my friends, made it to Laverre City home of the Fairy type Gym. This is going to be difficult, but that's why we've got Haku.

I do wish you luck with Valerie. You'll need some sort of strategy to beat her. Hopefully one of your members can learn a poison and/or steel type move.

Changing up the format slightly, hopefully just for this post and then it'll be back to the old format.

Laverre City isn't exactly my cup of tea. It's rather cutesy and overtly saccharine, almost like it's trying to disguise the terror within. Oh don't get me wrong, Fairy types are adorable but they are also dragon slayers and so I hate them. I spent some time buying healing items, just in case and rushed into the gym. Teleportation pads, Mom had told me that there's a gym in Kanto that uses these and now I see why.

The interior of the gym itself is like a dollhouse combined with a storybook. Like I'd walked into some sort of fairy tale involving teleportation. Rather appropriate, given the type specialization. Haku had a little trouble leading the party, I had apparently forgotten to account for Klefki... Or I would have if it weren't for the fact that I could use Surf or Volvagia's ember to deal with it, but hindsight is twenty/twenty.

Fighting my way up required a lot of work, but it was doable... Although after every battle I immediately ran back to heal, for the sake of both my precious dragons and my equally precious sanity. And then there was Valerie, leader of the gym and worst of them all. It took exactly three attempts, but eventually I defeated her in spite of her damned fairies. By the end of this gym, Valerie included, Haku was much stronger than anyone else.

Shauna and Trev decided they wanted to visit the Pokéball factory, which honestly wasn't surprising. I knew very little about what manufacturing pokéballs was like. Unfortunately Team Flare was present here too, and as I would later learn holding the factory workers hostage. The good thing here being that those garishly garbed goons were great for grinding. Sorry, I couldn't resist the alliteration. I found numerous items on the floor and then entered the president's office. There was one Admin in there with two scientists who looked rather important because their hair was a different color.

After defeating the admin, who was a pushover incidentally, and it looked like it would be two on one with the scientists teaming up on me. When Serena charged in and offered to help me face them. A tactic Bryony and Celosia hadn't expected. Soon both were defeated, although Daenerys may have caused one of Serena's pokémon to faint while taking out Celosia's Manectric. I'm glad Serena chose to join in, although I'm confident that I could have handled it myself.

The president, thanking us for preventing Team Flare from forcibly converting him to their cause, allowed me to chose between two items. These items were a pokéball that can catch literally anything and a big nugget of gold. And then he gave me both, as well as giving Serena both... Talk about trolling, seriously what was the point of the choice aside from faking us out and giving us both items?

After a long walk down route fifteen, a stop in Dendemille Town, and two evolutions, I went back to route fifteen and took a slight detour to route sixteen. Here I did more grinding, got a super rod (which is replacing the good and old rods from here on out) and moved back toward Dendemille. Now, Dendemille is a beautiful city constantly covered in snow. It's like it's always winter here and looks a lot like Christmas. I headed into the pokemon center immediately, because the weather outside was frightful and inside it was so delightful. I tried to head out to route seventeen, but the path was blocked by thick piles of snow and there was no pokemon on this route to help me.

I went walking back across this winter wonderland and decided to check out that Frost Cavern Trev had told me about. Walking across the bridge, I was stopped by a person next to a mamoswine. Trev was stopped here too, but insisted that since something was up at the cavern we'd need to check it out. Not one to turn down a request from a friend, I reluctantly made my way into the cavern. Battled some trainers, and then found Team Flare harassing an Abomasnow. Battling both the nameless grunt, at least I think she was nameless... I couldn't see a name tag... and a scientist named Mable. Mable's houndoom was too easy to defeat, eventually (much like gravity indicates) her team fell.

All that done, I returned to route seventeen and made my way towards Anistar... While running from every Ice Type I could avoid. Damn things are everywhere out here and frostbite isn't good for me or the dragons. Once in Anistar, I waited for eleven thirty AM the next day and procured Flamethrower to replace Volvagia's Ember. This will make for decent type coverage later, not great but there are no fire typed dragons available to me. I flew back to Dendemille to do more training for the team, got a rare candy and used it to get Haku up to level forty-four because he's not going to see any use in the next gym.

Anistar City is a massive, sprawling metropolis. It might be easy to lose my way here, although still more difficult to get lost in than the giant maze that is Lumiose. Taking some time to heal and buy items, I then set foot in the gym. At first it seemed kind of barebones, just a single room with no gym leader or trainers in sight. And then I stepped into the center and the walls fell away, revealing that the gym is actually in a metaphysical space with more teleportation pads.

I battled some gym trainers, but this might take a long while. I'm sure the person I'm standing next to is pissed that I'm just writing in my journal randomly instead of challenging the other trainers or gym leader just so they don't have to deal with me much longer. I'll write more later, I've got a gym to beat.

Never writing an update in the middle of a gym challenge again.

@sanianisa I tried to have Haku do as much of the work as was possible. Unfortunately there were some instances where he couldn't.

@Greninjaman I eventually came up with a decent strategy, it took three tries but eventually I got it.

Daenerys caused Serena's Absol to faint in the double battle. I kinda didn't know bulldoze effected your partner too, although this was the preferable way to learn. Better to knock out Serena's pokemon than my own, even if this isn't a nuzlocke.

I had a feeling Valerie would be tough. Wulfric up a head will also be a tough hurdle. Fair warning, Avalugg has crazy high defense.

@Greninjaman Thanks for the warning, I'll keep the Avalugg's defense in mind. Hopefully I'll make it through that safely. Here's hoping it's special defense is pathetic.

So, I defeated the psychic gym. Wasn't a big deal really, although it took two tries. Afterward I saw the latest news from Lysandre Industries, apparently the guy decided to announce he was the leader of Team Flare... Honestly, I'm not surprised he practically carries a neon sign with "I LEAD TEAM FLARE" written on it in big bold letters. Like his fashion sense should be a dead giveaway! Serena wasn't so quick to figure it out, or had chosen to play along until the idiot spelled it out for all of Kalos.

So now I've got to go to his café, kick his rear, and kick his employees' collective derrieres... Exçusez mon français.

After arriving at Lysandre Cafe, how full of himself can one guy be... Ugh. I fought the rouge imbecile's underlings, took down the waiter and the waitress. Opened the secret door which was located behind a shelf with the most obvious password lock. If you guessed "Swordfish", you're wrong but it's much worse. The password was "Open Sesame", I mean come on that's always the first guess with this type of stuff. Is it really that hard to come up with something that hasn't been in the pop-cultural lexicon for ages? Like this is locking a safe with the code "1234" levels of moronic.

Okay, just relax. The sooner I deal with this idiot, the closer I am to the elite four and becoming a gym leader in my own right. It took three battles before I finally beat Lysandre, he may be an idiot but he trained his Gyarados well. I'd almost be jealous, if it was a true dragon. His mienfoo took down Volvagia the first couple battles, on the third Volvagia got a crit with Zen Headbutt and knocked it out. Unfortunately Gyarados used outrage and returned the favor. I sent in Haku, who was hit with outrage triggering poin point. Gyarados hit itself in confusion, leading to venoshock weakening it further. Gyarados fainted and Lysandre sent out murkrow. I brought back Haku and sent out Carmilla, using rock tomb to my advantage. Murkrow fainted, Carmilla was brought back and Daenerys was sent out. Daenerys used Earth Power to eliminate Lysandre's Pyroar.

With all that done, I moved on putting the focus on the unevolved members of the team. Carmilla and Daenerys, you both did wonderfully here and you showed what it means to be dragons, but you'll need to go on the back-burner while others work on evolving. I battled Alianna again, and dear Arceus this was a thrill. First she used her Mightyena, nothing special it's the same one I faced in the powerplant. Then when that fainted she sent out Druddigon. Vlad tried his best, getting the thing relatively low, and then fainted because its Dragon Claw was more than he could handle.

A switch to Volvagia, in order to heal Vlad. Volvagia fainted, so I sent Vlad back in and he defeated the Druddigon. Seriously, fighting another trainer with at least one dragon was amazing.

After that battle, I decided to take a break. All I've gotta do before continuing on towards whatever Team Flare has in store down here, is to finish this entry and heal my party... I still wish I wasn't the only one doing anything about these rouge wearin' fools, but apparently the Kalos police aren't paid enough to deal with this... Or on Lysandre's payroll, which would be even more pathetic.

Honestly, Lysandre kept defeating me until that third battle and it drove me crazy. After the first time I put the game down for a while. After the second time I was mildly annoyed. I wish I'd remembered Gyarados had outrage and had been able to knock down Mienfoo on the first attempt. Because that was painful, both to play and write. That said I'm glad I finally beat that first fight, I'll be better prepared next time.
