"We must, indeed, all hang together or, most assuredly, we shall all hang separately."

After completing a Yellow Nuzlocke and an X Wonderlocke, I knew I wasn't finished with Pokémon challenges. The next step seemed obvious to me, if quite ambitious. I knew Platinum was among the most highly rated of all Pokémon games; plus, it's been longer since I've played through Sinnoh than any other region. Then, to complete the "holy trinity" of popular challenges, I would need to do a Wedlocke. This is hardly going to be a walk in the park, especially with a rule prohibiting the use of items in battle, but I think a Platinum Wedlocke is the perfect way to cap off a trio of challenge runs. Wish me luck!

  • Any Pokémon which faints is considered dead and cannot be used again. It must be permanently boxed. (I've never seen the point in releasing them; I like to keep them around so that I can have another record of the challenge progress.)
  • I may only catch the first Pokémon I encounter in any given area. Gift Pokémon count toward this, but in-game trades do not as long as I can legally obtain the required Pokémon. An exception to this is the Gender Clause: If I have any unpaired Pokémon on my team, encounters of the same gender as the majority on my team do not count. Once my team is full, it's back to the usual capture restrictions.
  • Pokémon on the team are partnered and must fight together. I cannot switch between different pairs during battle unless a move or other effect forces me to do so. If one Pokémon dies, its partner must finish the rest of the fight by themself or die trying.
  • All Pokémon on my team must have a nickname. The nicknaming theme for this challenge will be states of the USA.
  • Genderless Pokémon: most people disallow these entirely but I do not see the point in that. My rule is that genderless Pokémon will be like wild cards and can be paired with either male or female Pokémon. However, like gendered species, two genderless Pokémon still cannot be paired with each other.
  • Dupes Clause: I will follow a three-strikes policy on this. In each area I get three chances to find a valid encounter, taking into account Gender Clause. If all three are of species I already have, I will forfeit my encounter for that area. In the case of branched evolution lines, I may choose to accept more than one individual of a pre-evolved form but they must all evolve into different things.
  • Shiny Clause: If I encounter a Shiny according to the challenge rules, I still have to follow them, and then I can use the Shiny. Otherwise, I can catch any Shiny I find, but I won't use it as part of the challenge.
  • Male Combee Clause: Yeah.
  • Forced/scripted encounters do not count, though I may choose to use them if they are my valid first encounter. Regardless, Legendary Pokémon may not be used.
  • The Battle Style will be Shift. I understand that Set is normally preferred for challenges, but Wedlockes offer few enough switching possibilities as it is.
  • I will not be allowed to use any items from the Bag (except Poké Balls) in battle. This includes medicine, X items, Poké Dolls, etc.
  • I will be playing with level caps, which can be found here.
  • I may not swap out team members or rearrange pairs at my leisure. However, if none of my party members can learn a required HM, I may temporarily retrieve a Pokémon from the PC or catch one from the wild in order to progress.
Active party members are shown by bold. The dead are shown by strikethrough.

Hello, chaps! Benjamin Franklin at your service. I must say, you've come at a tricky time. The spirit of revolution is in the air here in the American colonies--and war to follow not long after, most likely. Still, if we're going to do either of those things--declare our independence, or fight a revolutionary war--we must be united. That's where I come in. I've been a postmaster, a legislator, a delegate, a governor, and an ambassador, not to mention a scientist, abolitionist, and author. I wasn't there when Patrick Henry gave his famous speech insisting that he would be content only with liberty or with death, but I heard about it right enough, and I knew that spirit was what we needed! Now it's up to me to travel all over these United Colonies--and even to France, if I have to--convincing others of the worthiness of the American cause and the necessity of their support. Small alliances are already in place here and there, but that's not going to be enough. If we are to triumph in this grand struggle, then out of many, we must become one.

Male Combee Clause: Yeah.
The Battle Style will be Shift
I think Shift is almost necessary in a Wedlocke. You only have one other Pokemon to switch with, so having the opportunity to get even the slightest of advantages makes sense.

I'll be rooting for you, Ben!
I'm sure you're totally not excited for your first Electric type encounter.

@Gokudera Yep yep yep. Funny you should mention an Electric-type encounter.

A tall white-haired man, stern but kindhearted, welcomes me. General Washington, sir, good to see you! He asks a few questions about my journey and whether I'm up to the task. He also asks for my signature, but, hmm, the line isn't long enough! "Frank" will have to do. Oh well, it should be good for a laugh! Washington then tells me about another man who will be helping me on this mission--a young fellow with, frankly, way too much energy. I should have recognized Alexander Hamilton, but it looks like his name was cut off too! Hello, Alex, welcome aboard. He hands me a Social Security card of my own too. Frank -- XXXX2. Ending in 2? I would have preferred 7, 8, or 9, but I'm sure this will be fine.

Alex is running around like he needs it to survive, and it's all I can do to keep up. I'm surprised when I step out of the house to see snow on the ground! Alex and I head north of town, where we meet General Washington again in the flesh. He concludes that in these dangerous times, we may need to be armed, and he provides each of us with a Continental soldier for protection before inviting us to visit him at the Capitol. Mine is Codename: Turtwig.

Obtained ??? the Turtwig on Route 201!

After the General departs, the two soldiers give us a brief display of their skills. Turtwig in the Frank corner triumphs over Chimchar in the Alex corner. I was concerned when it took 5 Tackles for the knockout, but Chimchar did nothing but Leer.

Alex then rushes over to Sandgem Town. Beauty came before age this time. There Washington's assistant greets us and escorts us to the courthouse. What was that person's name, Dawn? That can't be right. No, it was John. John Adams! Just as I thought--a pretty stiff person, very by-the-book and unexciteable.

It's here that Washington explains our true purpose. We must travel throughout the entire country, recruiting states to our cause. It turns out I'm farther along the road than I thought. That solider Turtwig? He's a mud turtle, reminding me of the turtles that live near my grandparents' house in his own home state of Oklahoma.

Recruited Oklahoma the male Turtwig!

One more thing--he also passed on a copy of my own book, Poor Richard's Almanac. I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do with that, but when I open it up, it's something else entirely. Not the pages I'm used to, but all sorts of official-looking documents with Washington's signature. Perhaps it will be useful in recruiting more states and obtaining their aid.

John Adams takes a moment to show me around town, pointing out the tavern and the general store. He doesn't have much to teach an old-timer like me, but there's no harm in humoring him for a bit. After I nip back to Twinleaf Town for a parcel, he even takes me to Route 202 to demonstrate a few rhetorical techniques, and furnishes me with some capture supplies. Poké Balls, he calls them. My role in all this has already seemed to go on quite a while, but I suppose now my mission can begin in earnest!

We mingle with several incompatible delegates before Oklahoma is able to strike up a conversation with one of them. Two Tackles later, the Level 3 female Shinx is caught! She's from Michigan--home of the Detroit Lions and known for its industrial production, which I'm sure uses a lot of electricity. I love electricity, in case you didn't know. Fascinating stuff. I'm very pleased by this turn of events.

Recruited Michigan the female Shinx on Route 202!

With our first allied pair, this is now a Wedlocke for real. We continue north, fending off challenges from fellow patriots who wish to test our abilities. None are a problem. A Shinx is definitely the best encounter I could have asked for. She's difficult to use right now due to having only a weak Tackle, but she covers a Turtwig pretty well and she'll be strong later. I'm also fortunate that Michigan has Intimidate and not Rivalry. Between that and Oklahoma's natural bulk they make a good pair for switching. A Lax Nature complements Intimidate even more, though I'll have to watch the reduced Special Defense.

Around Jubilife City I'm being careful, because I'm sure Alex will want to pop out and show his buddy Frank his new friends, but John Adams appears again to show me to the Trainer's School without incident. We do see one strange fellow dancing about; he introduces himself as Lafayette. A nice man but, as I said, very strange. He might be inclined to help us, though, so perhaps we'll see him again.

At the Trainer's School I give Alex his parcel, and he provides me with a map of all the territory we'll include in our new nation, but runs off without further ado. I get my first real scare of the challenge when a Trainer in there crits Michigan and leaves her barely above red health. That's one pitfall of Intimidate, I suppose--critical hits will appear to do even more damage than normal after bypassing the Attack drop. Still, Oklahoma is able to save the day. He grows to Level 9 and learns Absorb, and Michigan reaches 8, when I head north past the Trainer's School. I've been warned that if I draw too much attention to myself and act too snooty, the governors will be sure to reject my proposals. The cap for Governor Roark is Level 14.

A man in town gives me a Swiss Army Watch, which he says can perform all kinds of useful functions, and a lady gives me a Quick Claw for Oklahoma. He's a little slow on the uptake sometimes. I decide to try heading north again, where Michigan gets into a debate with a Level 4 female Starly. That was bound to happen sooner or later. I know about a species of predatory bird called the Mississippi kite, and of course the delegate from a state with a name like that has to be a missus. I hope she doesn't mind that one letter gets cut off due to the nickname length!

Recruited Mississippi the female Starly on Route 204!

I'm beginning to see how a mission with allied pairs will be difficult. I can't rely on Mississippi until she has a training partner, so I'd better find one of them posthaste! I'm not sure she'll pair well with the folks in Ravaged Path, so I turn towards Route 203.

First, I'm stopped by Alex, demanding another match! Oklahoma deals with Starly fine, but Michigan worries me against Chimchar. It looks like Ember could have done major damage and possibly cost me the whole run right then and there, but Alex sticks to Scratch and then Leer. The young'un has a lot to learn.

Now it's time. I'm very frustrated to encounter a Zubat, but as a female it would be incompatible with Mississippi. Then, I encounter another Zubat, a male at Level 4. Sighing, I catch it. This must be the delegate from Illinois--sounds like he's saying "I'll annoy!" Truly. I'm so frustrated, in fact, I mash right past the nickname screen, but I guess that's what the name rater is for.

Recruited Illinois the male Zubat from Route 203!

Two Flying-types who don't cover one another's weaknesses at all--not an ideal situation. They're going to have trouble in the immediate future, and likely beyond. Raising a Zubat is an exercise in humility and patience, and his Bold Nature makes everything worse. Mississippi is forced to carry nearly all the weight of this pair. Supersonic is not exactly reliable, but an enemy hit deals about three times as much damage as a single Leech Life, so it's worth all the misses. At some point it occurs to me that I should be guaranteed a Psyduck now in Ravaged Path, which would be an excellent soldier to present to Roark. I have a 35% chance of finding a Psyduck here, so wouldn't you know that I find three more Zubat in a row, exhausting Dupes Clause for this location. Illinois has enough representation already, thank you very much! I'd best be moving on.

Ravaged Path encounter failed.

I spend a while more drilling Illinois, though he seems to grow slower than the rest and still lags behind in levels. Mississippi's new Wing Attack makes it easier to deal with other Trainers, so I make my way further east from Jubilife City. Learning Astonish at Level 9 boosts Illinois's damage output versus the few things that aren't Normal-type, but the going is still slow. I know that dealing with the fellows who live in the areas ahead can be quite rocky, so I call a halt in front of a tunnel known as Oreburgh Gate.

Should I include the sprites of Pokemon in my updates, like for Oklahoma :turtwig: and Michigan :shinx: ? It'll make it easier to keep track of the action at the cost of much messier lines.

Now I'm picturing Looker with a French accent and it's hysterical.
And Alexander Hamilton is about the only proper character to be Barry lol.

A Quiet Turtwig and partnered with Shinx? That's a great combo! It's a shame you can't get Egg moves. Fire Fang would make Luxray a perfect partner.

And, as per the laws of Pokemon, getting good luck with one pair means not so gre as t luck with the next
Zubat and Starly is not an...ideal pairing, but...
Uh...at least Fighting types won't be a problem for them.

I'm really liking this run so far, Ben!
Here's hoping the British don't take too many of them.

Oh forgot the QOTD.
Yes. I always appreciate seeing the sprites in updates. Sometimes I forget which pokemon has which nickname in a run I'm reading, and the sprites help a lot

Hype! I'm a big fan of Wedlockes, so I'm curious to see how you'll do! I speak from experience though when I say having no items available in battle in a Wedlocke is rough, so you definitely have a challenging run ahead. Best of luck!

As for the QOTD, I agree with Gokey. It can get hard to remember which nickname was which team member, so sprites are definitely appreciated!

@Gokudera Isn't Looker already canonically French? At least, he speaks with a foreign-sounding pattern in these games, but not in Kalos. Maybe that's just a fan theory I saw sometime.
@Calaf I'm sure I'm going to regret the no-items rule at some point, but I wanted to do what I could to really make it a challenge.

Just inside the entrance, a kind mountain man lends me a tool that will help me improve roadways in the places where I travel. I'll need Roark's permission to use it, but it should be very helpful! Then, I cross my fingers, hoping to catch sight of the native waterfowl. At last luck is with me; Illinois :zubat: is accosted by a Level 6 female Psyduck! We soon learn that she's from Maryland. The state flag complements her yellow color well. I'm rather dissatisfied by her Impish Nature, however. My luck with those has not been very good at all.

Recruited Maryland the female Psyduck from Oreburgh Gate!

Not much farther on, I get into a debate with a very powerful Bidoof. It soon becomes clear that this citizen is no patriot, but a Britain-loving Tory! A critical hit from her Bidoof leaves Mississippi :starly: at just 1 HP. Her partner Illinois :zubat: is forced to take the stage, but thanks to several Defense Curls, Leech Life is doing pitiful damage and the Zubat actually runs out of ink for his writing quills with Bidoof in red health. Illinois himself has only 2 HP remaining when he lands a Supersonic, and Bidoof damages itself twice in a row with failed attacks. Just one more would do it...but the Tory rallies for a final blow.

Lost Illinois the Zubat :zubat:

:starly: Mississippi, still at 1 HP, is able to honor her alliance with one final Wing Attack. Oh, dear me. A single Potion would have saved the day, but I'm a statesman, not a field medic. Maybe I never gave Illinois :zubat: enough credit. He seemed like a slacker holding Mississippi back, and I always thought he wouldn't survive the war, but at the end he gave everything he had for his partner. You will be missed, Illinois.

Now I'm traveling in the company of two lone wolf female delegates. I'd better fix that, and so after passing through Oreburgh City, I head south to its famous mine. I don't intend to explore all the way through, but I want to finish my recruiting before I return west briefly to hone my skills. The approach of another Zubat makes me want to throw my Almanac, but after him comes a Geodude at Level 7! Oklahoma :turtwig: chips away with Tackle and the small, lumpy, earthy creature is caught! It reminds me of a potato.

Recruited Idaho the male Geodude from Oreburgh Mine!

Since Mississippi :starly: has been part of our coalition longer, Idaho becomes her partner rather than :psyduck: Maryland's. I'm confident in his ability to fill the void left by Illinois; aside from a shared Ice weakness, the new allies complement one another well. I'm not done yet, though! To the north is Route 207, where Michigan :shinx: corners a Level 7 Ponyta! This is perfect, the best I could have asked for. One of the hotter states, and a place known for wild horses, is New Mexico. He partners with Maryland. His workable Rash Nature is nearly the opposite of her Impish Nature, which should be fun.

Recruited New Mexico the male Ponyta from Route 207!

With that, the stagecoach I'm using to travel has reached its capacity, and I couldn't be happier. This strikes me as a very solid crew, though they'll need some education before they're ready for a real challenge. Idaho :geodude: is doing quite well for himself, and things speed up once Maryland :psyduck: and New Mexico :ponyta: learn Water Gun and Ember respectively. Oklahoma :turtwig: and Michigan :shinx: examine the coal-mining infrastructure and find that Governor Roark seems to be running it very well. However, we'll need to speak to him at greater length to see whether we can count on his support, so I pay a visit to the local legislature in the middle of town once everyone is at least Level 11.

None of Roark's clerks offer any resistance. Still, I need more time to prepare. Based on the pace of the game so far, I would assume 12 is a sensible level for Roark's ace, but I want all my guards to be 14 to match. Maryland :psyduck: is a tempting possibility to take him on, but :shinx: Michigan's Intimidate should have more utility than anything New Mexico :ponyta: can do. My mind is made up once Oklahoma :turtwig: learns Razor Leaf, a powerful alternative to Absorb, and Michigan picks up Spark, meaning she may be in a position to handle Cranidos. Furthering my delight, word comes from Washington at Level 14 that Mississippi :starly: has been promoted to Staravia! She'll still be taking a backseat for the upcoming confrontation but it was a very pleasant surprise.

Governor Roark greets me in his office and we get right down to business. As per the plan, Oklahoma :turtwig: swiftly dispatches Geodude. Onix is faster, and to my concern it uses Stealth Rock. I'd better amend my plan of switching in Michigan :shinx: afterward to soften Cranidos. Surprisingly Onix survives an Absorb; Roark heals and it survives another one. If only I had that luxury. It finally goes down, but only after striking Oklahoma with a critical hit Rock Throw. Last is Cranidos. Its speedy Headbutt deals worrying damage and causes Oklahoma to flinch. This is bad. A second Headbutt leaves him at a mere 5 HP, but thank the Lord, Razor Leaf takes it out in one hit!

Frank received the Coal Badge!

I take a deep breath. The Quick Claw Oklahoma was holding didn't trigger a single time, and he was decidedly unlucky, but he did it. Growing to Level 15 from the EXP of Geodude and Onix may have made all the difference. Meanwhile, the embarrassed governor bestows his seal upon me as a sign of his commitment. He's quick to warn me that the seven other governors may not come around so easily, but that's a matter for another time! Right now I'm looking foward to building up my reserves.

What should I do about Cheryl and the others like her? Right now, the plan I have is to not catch anything at all as long as they're with me, and then once it's back to single battles, I'll immediately begin treating the next Pokémon I find as my first encounters.

It's a shame Illinois died, but I guess it was to be expected: keeping Zubat alive before it learns Wing Attack is very tricky. It's good that you beat Roark without any casualties though, congrats!

I definitely think it's the right call to put off getting your encounter until you've ditched Cheryl. In fact, I'd advise you to take on the trainers in the forest 1 on 1 as much as possible. In my experience, double battles are public enemy #1 in Wedlockes.

I forgot Looker was supposed to be French. I knew he was supposed to be foreign, but I wasnt sure if it was France.
But I was more talking like a comically French accent like in Monty Python and the Holy Grail lol.
And like Calaf said (the C is messing with me lol), it sucks to lose Illinois, but Idaho is a fantastic partner for Mississippi. There arent too many Ice types, especially early on, sonthey should be set.
You've got 3 pretty balanced teams, Ben!
It's a shame Marlyand is Impish, but I'd imagine Damp can actually be really useful in a Locke. You don't have to worry about Explosion shenanigans.
And, again I agree with C/Kalaf on holding off on encounters.

Quick question for YOU, though. How are you going to handle Idaho? Are you going to just restrict him to a Graveler or do you have a way to evolve him?

@Calaf Can't argue with you on that one. Thanks for the suggestion!
@Gokudera Good point, I hadn't thought about that. I'm actually playing this on a physical copy of Platinum, so I can do a tradeback with another cartridge to evolve him. Let's say for the record that I'll evolve him at the level Mississippi also reaches her final form.

I decide to instruct Maryland :psyduck: in the art of smashing rocks; Idaho :geodude: is the only other one who might be up to the task, but he'll soon learn Magnitude to shift rocks in his own way. Upon my return to Jubilife City, I run into Lafayette again. He encourages me to visit the tavern to pick up a "Pal Pad," apparently a list of foreign countries we might ally with. He really is a strange fellow.

That done, I head north, where I find George Washington and John Adams engaged with two of the most peculiar men I have ever seen. Could they be the British redcoats? No, their uniforms are different--but they have the most outlandish blue haircuts. The blueheads are clearly enemies of Washington, and that makes them enemies of me! John Adams and I team up to take them on.

Mississippi :staravia: is out front, and that's the right choice to take on their Glameow and Stunky. It's a tense fight, even with Intimidate: a crit Fake Out from Glameow and a Focus Energy and Poison Gas from Stunky nearly make me fear for Mississippi's life, but she and John's Piplup get the job done. Washington thanks me for my service and renews my charge to travel all throughout the colonies.

The upper half of Route 204 leading to Floaroma Town also proves to be a challenge. This practice of two states fighting in closely allied pairs has its pitfalls. Maryland :psyduck: and New Mexico :ponyta: are up for a Double Battle against two twin patriots and their Level 11 Pachirisu. If it weren't for the fact that they lacked any Electric moves, I would have had some deaths. Even so, Maryland has to take a total of 6 Quick Attacks, one of them a critical hit, before they let me go my way in peace. One bit of good news is that along the way, Michigan :shinx: reaches Level 15 and is promoted to Luxio! This boosts my confidence a little. I've never been on a Platinum journey before, and it's been over 8 years since I went on a Diamond or Pearl journey, but I know there's a nasty Mars fight not too far in the future. All the statesmen in my company are Level 15 by the time we reach Floaroma Town, and New Mexico picks up Flame Wheel.

Floaroma is a lovely town, full of beauty for the eyes and the nose. Outside a flower shop I pick some Berries and immediately replant them to grow more. Ordinarily I wouldn't bother with this in the middle of a mission, but I'll need to get as much mileage as possible out of my held items.

A couple more blueheads hanging out in the north of town say something about the windworks to the east, so that's where I go, and sure enough I find more of their company loitering about. I whip the one guarding the door; he explains I'll need to go back for the key, and the two in Floaroma Town are quickly dealt with too. Two more blueheads inside the windworks offer no resistance. At the far end of the building I spy a woman with the same uniform but red hair. A senior officer, perhaps? Not to worry--I have a plan.

Idaho :geodude: and Mississippi :staravia: are both Level 16 by now. Idaho stands his ground against a Bite attack from General Mars's Zubat, and Rock Throw takes it out in one go. Mississippi takes the field with her Intimidate against Purugly. After tanking a Fake Out and Scratch, she uses the Pluck learned from a manual loaned to me by a man in Floaroma Town. The healing from Purugly's Oran Berry is much appreciated, and after exchanging a few more blows, Mississippi's own Oran Berry restores her stamina a little more. A final jab from Quick Attack wraps up the fight nicely. It can't be a coincidence that this Purugly yields 666 experience points. Begone! The British general accepts her loss gracefully and beats a hasty retreat. A few more like that and the war will be won!

I avoid mingling with the crowd around the windworks due to rumors that a VIP visits every Friday. Instead, the way is now clear north along Route 205. Maryland :psyduck: convinces a Shellos to lend his support, though for now he'll enlist in the reserves. Somehow, I could tell just by looking at him that he represented the state of California.

Recruited California the male West Sea Shellos on Route 205!

At the north end of this road is a massive forest I'll need to traverse. For the time being, however, I return to Floaroma Town. Earlier, I pasted a notice to a message board under a tree, and I'm going to wait to see if anyone in the area responds to my summons. Alas, after a few hours, the only creature who appears is a male Combee. Recruiting a mere child would never do!

Upon entering Eterna Forest to the north, I'm met by a woman begging for assistance in passing through. I'm in a hurry, and I'd really rather not, but...I can't turn her down. She's kind enough to supply me with practically limitless medical supplies. Two people along the road partner up to take us on in a team debate. They're no serious danger, but it's quite annoying when a Pachirisu's first Spark paralyzes Michigan :luxio: and she's subsequently fully paralyzed four times in a row.

On the whole the forest is not nearly as troublesome as I expected. After the first pair, every other set of Trainers can be fought one-on-one if so desired. A pair of Abra users scare me when they employ a secret, hidden power of unknown origins, but Oklahoma :turtwig: and Mississippi :staravia: take the hits beautifully. Oklahoma, in fact, reaches Level 18 and earns promotion into a Grotle! Cheryl herself is also far less useless than I had recalled, and her Chansey finishes off a fair few wild enemies with Egg Bomb. Before reaching the end of the forest, we spend a good deal of time training, and my whole company reaches Level 20. Maryland :psyduck: has also picked up Confusion, which is quite nice for taking on the Budew. In fact, several new techniques are acquired by various members: Bite :luxio:, Endeavor :staravia:, and Stomp :ponyta:.

When Cheryl and I part ways she gifts me a Soothe Bell, which I put on Mississippi :staravia: for lack of any other options. She'll have a wickedly powerful Return some day. Before progressing, I intend to return to Floaroma Town to harvest some Berries. Now that I've finished escorting the young lady, I'm also free to return to my business of statesmanship. I'm afraid Oklahoma :oklahoma: may have been a bit too harsh on the Wurmple we find, but I realize there's still a tiny bit of life in her and we quickly reach a deal. Shame she's at Level 10 though, as she'll be lacking good moves right after evolving. I'm picking up a Georgia vibe--bugs love to eat peaches as much as we do, surely. Also, there's no telling which way she'll go--kind of like the upcoming Georgia senate runoff election.

Recruited Georgia the female Wurmple from Eterna Forest!

Sadly, the Honey tree message board in Floraroma Meadow continues to spite me. As soon as I have Georgia, two more Georgian delegates appear there. I reckon I've only got one more shot to recruit somebody from there. On a happier note, since it's Friday, I pay a visit back to the windworks and meet that VIP. He's a rather odd fellow--must be from Delaware. Does anyone actually know what goes on there? It sort of just drifts around on the edge of the national consciousness.

Recruited Delaware the male Drifloon from Valley Windworks!

Back on the northeastern side of Eterna Forest, only a few Fishermen separate me from Eterna City, and Oklahoma :grotle: mops them up quickly. Once I arrive in the city, Alex runs into me--literally--and takes me to see a famous statue. There seem to be an awful lot of British in this city. In front of the monument, we see a man who also has blue hair, though it's a slightly more dignified color. His bearing is also far more regal, and based on the way he brushes us aside, he's got quite a high opinion of himself. Very strange.

Putting him out of my mind, I continue exploring east a bit. Under the shadow of an impressive mountain, Oklahoma :grotle: meets someone well versed in disruptive logical fallacies like hypnosis. It's a long struggle, but eventually the Bronzor is won over. Some people take issue with a person like this, whose allegiance isn't immediately obvious, but they're perfectly all right with me. Bronzor has a strong connection with all sorts of metals, artifacts, and bells--like those found in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.

Recruited Pennsylvania the Bronzor from Route 211!

Making friends is all well and good, but it's time to concentrate on those already in positions of power. Here, that's Governor Gardenia. As I head that direction, though, yet another person hails me from behind. Hmm? At first I think it may be a woman, but I soon realize it's actually a man. He's kind enough to provide me another HM ticket, this one for forested areas, and after musing for a while about how we share the same goals, introduces himself as Aaron Burr. Something tells me I haven't seen the last of this fellow, not at all.

The secretaries employed as part of the lady Governor's staff are a cakewalk for :ponyta: New Mexico. I take time off for the delegates to practice again, realizing I should have spent even more time with Cheryl, and then I go to have a chat with Gardenia herself. Apparently she also has a friend from Oklahoma, and to my annoyance, it barely survives Flame Wheel and puts up Reflect. Gardenia heals, and after Turtwig hangs on from two more Flame Wheels, it uses Sunny Day. Not good for my lightning experiments, but otherwise, perfect! Next up is Cherrim, and I start to worry when it shrugs off a Flame Wheel with over half its health remaining. New Mexico, by contrast, loses 20% of his from Grass Knot, which is more than I expected. At that time, however, the support from Turtwig ends, while the sunrays are as bright as ever--Cherrim can't stand up to another attack. New Mexico then gets in the first hit against Roserade, and Gardenia's last soldier goes down in one move.

Frank received the Forest Badge!

Thanks to the experience, New Mexico :ponyta: reaches Level 23. Governor Gardenia was her own worst enemy during that fight, but nevertheless she must acknowledge our victory. Moving right along!

@Calaf That's especially painful considering I once called you out for the exact same thing. I am ashamed.

Before I go any further, let me make clear some field instructions I've received. Mt. Coronet is divided into two distinct sections: the northern one which gives access to Snowpoint City, and the southern one, which gives access to Spear Pillar. I'll be allowed two encounters in the mountain, one for each of these divisions.

Now, Oklahoma :grotle: is the only man traveling with us who's trained in carpentry, so it falls to him to remove any small trees obstructing our path. With this skill, I'm able to return to Floaroma Town very easily to continue posting messages in hopes of attracting a recruit. Sadly, after a total of 6 attempts, the only respondents were two male Combee, no one at all one time, and three more Georgians. Time for me to move on from here.

Floaroma Town encounter failed.

Not to worry, not to worry. There's a famous estate north of Eterna Forest which I'm now able to visit, so I decide to put in a call there. New Mexico :ponyta: soon convinces one of the ladies, a Gastly, to join us. She, like everyone else here, always seems to be floating around with her head in the clouds--clouds of nauseating smoke, that is. Not unlike the residents of a certain "mile-high" state...

Recruited Colorado the female Gastly from the Old Chateau!

One other place to which I'm now able to travel is the British garrison in the north of Eterna City. It's tempting--perhaps I can do a little spy work while I'm there.

Lafayette is waiting just inside the door, disguised as one of the blueheads. He warns me about traps and false staircases--but I ignore him. Spirit of adventure and all that. I challenge everyone I meet, and among the soldiers I encounter several Glameow. Every time they use Hypnosis, it hits, collectively incapacitating me four separate times. I've no choice but to wait it out; :grotle: Oklahoma, :luxio: Michigan, and :staravia: Mississippi are bulky enough not to be in danger, but it's still a massive annoyance. I checked--Hypnosis only has 60% accuracy in Platinum. How rude. Speaking of which, I get quite a scare against a scientist guarded by a Level 20 Kadabra, especially when he powers up with an X Special. I can't help chuckling when Oklahoma's Bite takes it out in one go.

At the top of the four-storey building I find a woman with purple hair. This must be another General! I'm right, she introduces herself as Jupiter, and without further ado we commence. Mississippi :staravia: at Level 23 takes out Zubat with two Plucks, losing 20% of her health to Wing Attack. Then comes the real beast, Skuntank, at the same level. Idaho :geodude: is up. I cross my fingers; he's hit with Screech, but rolls a respectable Magnitude 8. Skuntank is left in red health but heals with a Sitrus Berry. It looks like the Pluck strategy I used against Mars won't work a second time, but Mississippi still needs to rescue her partner. She takes a Night Slash on the switch, which I assume must be one of the infamous crits when it deals about 33% after Intimidate...but it's not. This is where the fear sets in. Mississippi is faster and Pluck deals just barely half of Skuntank's remaining HP. Idaho could finish the fight, but he and I would both be devastated to lose his ally. However, Mississippi survives another Night Slash in red health and silences her enemy with a fourth Pluck. It's over--neither of Skuntank's Night Slashes was a crit, and I take back every complaint I made about those four Hypnosis attacks.

As at the windworks, the British disappear quickly without a trace after their defeat. The local ostler, who had been taken hostage, thanks me profusely and invites me back to his inn for a reward. Don't mind if I do. On the way, I'm once again met by Aaron Burr! It turns out he's found another representative to join me! How could I say no to such an offer? There is a catch--this person is interested in our cause, but is unable to provide any sort of support at the moment. Even though they're a citizen and a patriot, they don't represent any state. Maybe I can reconsider their case at a later date.

Recruited "Guam" the Egg from Eterna City!

I'm then finally able to go meet the ostler Rad Rickshaw, and to my delight, he offers me a brand-new carriage for my personal use! This will make travel so much easier and faster. Truly a wonderful and useful gift. I'll put it to use right now on the highway south. Here, the citizens specialize in many Fire, Flying, and Electric types. The greatest challenge is only a cyclist with a Level 21 Ponyta, and Michigan :luxio: safely dispatches it. Progress is also smooth east along Route 207. Under the shadow of the mountain, John Adams catches up with me again to offer me a device to seek out those I've already met who wish to be drafted as new soldiers.

After bidding him farewell, I must examine the lower part of Route 206. Here, Oklahoma :grotle: encounters a man I'd never expected to meet: a Gligar! However, my friend is a bit too eager, and in his haste we overburden the Gligar with a critical hit Razor Leaf. No doubt he'll hurry off to tell his friends, so it might not be wise to remain here much longer.

Route 206 encounter failed.

One interesting thing is a tale told by a local mountain man of a hidden cave. After a little poking around, we find the entrance! This is the perfect moment to use the manuscript I recovered from the Oreburgh Gate to teach Michigan :luxio: Flash. Underground, I'm ecstatic when Maryland :psyduck: runs across a Gible! My stomach drops quickly when it fires off a Dragon Rage to remove 2/3 of her health. That's not good. I'm not ready to give up, so New Mexico :ponyta: subs in for his ally. I'm able to get Gible to half health, but damage from Sand Tomb is racking up. I toss a Dusk Ball I picked up along the road and hold my breath...count to three...no! At the last second it rejects the contract we offer and hits a Take Down. Gible is slightly weaker now, but the next best thing I have is a measly Great Ball, and New Mexico is well within range of dying to Dragon Rage. After racking my brains for minutes on end, I conclude I can't risk it. New Mexico has been too valuable a partner, so he drives off the Gible with a last Stomp.

Wayward Cave encounter failed.

This isn't the end of the world. I just trained with a Garchomp on my last mission, and forging the same alliance again might be a little boring this time around--to say nothing of the fact that she was so strong it almost felt like cheating. As a sort of consolation prize, at the end of the cave I find a technical manual for the Earthquake technique. I'm amazed I'd find such a powerful tool so early into my mission.

I decide to skip the part of the cave where Mira is waiting. Maryland :psyduck: and New Mexico :ponyta: are already Level 25, and the cap for Governor Fantina is only 26. I'm going to have to be careful. Thanks to the new, well-equipped carriage from Rad Rickshaw, I'm able to navigate a tricky path back to Oreburgh City. I travel to a certain building there and show him an old will and testament I unearthed back in Eterna City. The executor is asked to contribute most of his possessions to the cause of his country, and in fact he's so moved, he comes along with us himself! He reveals an impressive collection of rocks, gems, and Fossils--just like the Natural State, Arkansas, is known for.

Recruited Arkansas the male Shieldon from Oreburgh City!

The Appalachian Range now stands between me and the rest of the country, and I'm eager to see what it holds! My luck has been all over the place and this time it's great. Many people here represent those with whom I'm already allied, but the first person I meet is an exception to that, and the Clefairy is convinced to join us with no hassle at all! He's a strange one--his strong connections with the moon and outer space, as well as reclusive habits, remind me of the vast empty places in the west of our country, but he's also got just enough glitz and glamor to be at home in a place like Las Vegas. Well, it's obvious then.

Recruited Nevada the male Clefairy from Mt. Coronet South!

It's here that I once again meet the British-looking man I first saw at Lake Verity, and then again at Eterna City. His musings continue to unnerve me, but he hasn't...done anything yet, and the right to freedom of speech is one of the things that will make our new nation so great. Nothing for it but to watch him walk away once more.

The many lakes in this portion of the cavern are inaccessible to me, so I soon find myself on Route 208. I strike up a conversation with a florist; after switching out Idaho :geodude: so that Mississippi :staravia: can handle a Roselia, the Geodude comes back out. He takes surprising damage from a Combee's critical hit Bug Bite, but a single Rock Throw concludes the battle. It also gives him enough experience to reach Level 25 and earn promotion into a Graveler!

The first person I meet here is a Bibarel, and it's really about time. Pluck from Mississippi :staravia: should wear it down nicely. To my chagrin, I never get to test my hypothesis, as she immediately scores a critical hit to shut down the opponent before they can utter a word. Today has not been the day for recruits.

Route 208 encounter failed.

Nevertheless, my spirits are up, and all in our company are Level 25, when I enter Hearthome City. This is a wonderful place, full of kind people ane excellent goods for a traveler. I soon find myself in possession of an Amulet Coin and a Shell Bell. It gets even better when I stumble across a famous essayist named Bebe, a real genius at attracting and training statesmen. She introduces me to just such a person, an Eevee, and he's happy to stand with me. His capacity for change and adaptation is unparalleled, and as the saying goes, "in New York you can be a new man!"

Recruited New York the male Eevee from Hearthome City!

It's nice to be able to relax for a bit--I'm sure General Washington won't mind. I take some lovely strolls with Oklahoma :grotle: and Maryland :psyduck: in the gardens to the north of the city. New Mexico :ponyta: decides to participate in some community theater at the grand concert hall and gives such a smashing performance in a Beauty-themed play, courtesy of the Fire Spin technique he practiced back on Route 206, that he earns a ribbon! In the lobby, though, I meet Governor Fantina. She appears to have been expecting me, and invites me to the local courthouse for a chat. Back to business already, but such is life.

Fantina's clerks are a bit more challenging than those in other places, especially two of them with Haunter. I hope that's not a bad sign. After defeating them, it doesn't take long to train to Level 26. I'm sure Ghost-types will be quite tricky, and I wish I had some natural medicines to cure confusion, but Chesto Berries will have to do.

Idaho :graveler: starts off the battle in fine fashion. His Rock Blast hits, which is only an 80% chance to start with, and it achieves the 4 hits required to take out Duskull before it can move. I expect to meet Haunter next, but instead Fantina goes right to Mismagius, so Mississippi :staravia: moves into position. Its Psybeam does nearly 50%, while Pluck doesn't do nearly as much. Mississippi steals and eats Mismagius's Sitrus Berry, but it doesn't help much. Watching my delegate injure herself thanks to Confuse Ray is even more demoralizing. It doesn't take long for two more Psybeams from the speedy, powerful opponent to leave Mississippi speechless and defeated.

Lost Mississippi the Staravia :staravia:

Idaho :graveler: appears in a rage, but this isn't his fight. He's a very solid, down-to-earth guy, which means he's helpless against something like Magical Leaf.

Lost Idaho the Graveler :graveler:

That's the first full alliance to go down, and it's heartbreaking. Another partnership must be invoked. Oklahoma :grotle: similarly takes almost 50% of his health, this time from Shadow Ball, but it also reduces his Special Defense. That may be the last straw. When Oklahoma silences Mismagius in a single critical hit Bite, I almost collapse from relief. The fight against Haunter is thoroughly anticlimactic.

Frank received the Relic Badge!

Not all the French are as eager to support us as Lafayette, it seems. Governor Fantina acquiesces in the end, but not without heavy strife. All of us knew, going into this, that there would be loss. That's how it is in revolution and war. That doesn't make the loss any easier to bear, though, and this victory is decidedly bittersweet. At least now Mississippi can reunite with Illinois, and I'm sure they along with Idaho will continue to walk by our sides. Their death will be our liberty.

Rest well, Mississippiand Idaho. You fought well for your country., and your deaths wont be in vain. I hope.
Fantina's gym is tough. Those 2 Haunters are exceptionally annoying. They must be holding hidden Scope Lenses because they hit Hypnosis all the damn time. Kind it like those Glameowm
Ok. I'm absolutely convinced that Hypnosishas a higher accuracy for the AI in Gen 4. It hits WAY more than it ever should.
It's a damn shame those two fell, but Fantina's Mismaguius can be an absolute terror.

I know the Marquis de Lafayette is supposed to.be a brilliant strategist and was crucial to our winning the Revolutionary War, but...this must have been early in the career. The man was in the Red Coat's hide out with a disguiae, and TOOK IT OFF in front of the entire army. Youd think that's espionage 101.
(Sorry. That moment just always cracks me up. Never change, Looker).

And I'm glad you're splitting Mt. Coronet. Only getting a single encounter can absolutely screw you over if you get a crappy one early on.

QOTD: I'm loving these little tidbits.
Just waiting to see what Pokemon you bless with Virginia. ;)

Don't worry about it too much, it slips up on you when you're using these in-line sprites lol

Losing two mons to Fantina like this is rough, but I don't think you could've prevented them. A Mismagius with Shadow Ball and great coverage moves is just an incredibly powerful opponent at this point in the challenge. At least Oklahoma made it through in one piece and on top of that, you've got two evolutions right around the corner, so keep your head up!

QOTD: I like it! As a European, I can't say that I know much about the individual states, so it's cool to learn something about them.

@Gokudera I swear I had the story for one of these next encounters planned out before you said anything about Virginia.
@Calaf I've been questioning myself as to why I didn't go in with my two Pokémon who both know Bite. Hindsight is 20/20, as they say.

I have to take extreme caution exiting the courthouse. Something tells me it's about time for Alex to make an appearance, and it would be disastrous if he caught me in such a state of disarray and sorrow.

The first order of business, when it comes to choosing new representatives, is seeing what can be made of :pokemonegg: Guam. I return to Route 206 where they'll have plenty of time to think, and it isn't long before he picks up the ways of a Togepi! A tiny, mysterious thing who can't really stand up for itself yet calls to mind Rhode Island.

Hatched Rhode Island the male Togepi!

I spend a while reviewing my options, and eventually I settle on asking Colorado the female Gastly :gastly: and New York the male Eevee :eevee: to join the team. Their natures are Naughty and Lonely respectively, neither of which are perfect, but both of which are workable. My thought is that if New York evolves into Umbreon, the two will have excellent defensive synergy, and their two very different stat compositions may complement each other well.

Colorado :gastly: comes to us at Level 14 and her only attacking maneuver is Lick. New York :eevee: comes at Level 20 and his only attacking maneuver is Tackle. The going is slow. They pick up Night Shade and Quick Attack very soon, but I may still be here awhile. My heart stops for a moment when a wild Chingling's Confusion leaves Colorado at just 1 HP. In addition to raising levels, I also need to prioritize raising New York's friendship. I equip him with the Soothe Bell and enter him in a Smart-themed play, where he distinguishes himself just like New Mexico :ponyta: did. Colorado has finally caught up to her partner in terms of level when disaster strikes. A critical hit Bite from a wild Zubat outside Hearthome City takes all 50 of her hit points in a single go.

Lost Colorado the Gastly :gastly:

I shouldn't be surprised, as her ability to take any kind of hit was frankly shameful, but it's very frustrating nonetheless. The only potential allies I have left for New York :eevee: are Georgia the female Wurmple and Pennsylvania the wildcard Bronzor. I'm not sure how reliable Georgia's stats will be, so Pennsylvania the Bronzor :bronzor: partners with New York.

Just like its predecessor, Pennsylvania :bronzor: is at Level 14 and has just one attacking move, in this case Confusion. It's the reserved type, not doing much at all whenever it finds itself in a debate. However, it occurs to me that the Old Chateau is an excellent training ground for a Psychic-type not weak to Ghost. Pretty soon Pennsylvania's at Level 21 and has picked up Extrasensory too. I think evolving New York :eevee: into an Umbreon remains my best course of action, so I continue my efforts to strengthen our friendship.

By around 24 I'm losing steam. The highest-leveled civilians I can find top out at 20, just west of Hearthome. They don't give much EXP but due to things like Budew's Poison Point and Bibarel's Rollout, they're still difficult and costly to defeat. At this point I decide to retrace my steps and explore Wayward Cave proper. Extrasensory from Pennsylvania :bronzor: does a good job taking out the Rock-types, as long as I stay away from the Geodude who are strong enough to know Self-Destruct, and New York :eevee: can take on the Zubat by himself. The other soldiers in the cave are pretty good training partners, and in the cave's heart I stumble across another dignitary like Cheryl who needs my help. Thanks Mira and her wicked Kadabra, my new pair of allies grows to Level 28. This is the tipping point--an Eevee learns Bite at Level 29 and Umbreon learns Confuse Ray. Until I can make absolutely sure his friendship is high enough, I can't allow New York to advance any further. I instead focus on raising my other compatriots to Level 27, in preparation for a fight I've been dreading.

Sure enough, when I enter the gatehouse leading east of Hearthome, Alex is waiting for me. He leads off with Intimidate support from his own Mississippian delegate, backed up by a Fire-Water-Grass core. Maryland :psyduck: and New Mexico :ponyta: will take this, with the former holding Shell Bell and the latter simply relying on an Oran Berry.

The fight starts off with promise. New Mexico :ponyta: will need three Flame Wheels to take down Staravia, and it manages to land both of the last two even though Double Team was used after the first. I take a risk and leave him in to muscle past Buizel. Similarly, it requires three Stomps, but he does an excellent job tanking a Quick Attack and Water Gun. Monferno is next, and Maryland :psyduck: appears to meet it. Water Pulse does great damage, but to my suprise, Alex brings out his Roselia to tank the next one. I didn't see that coming. New Mexico suffers a Stun Spore and Leech Seed on the switch, but he pulls through again with Flame Wheel for a oneshot. Finally, the weakened Monferno is no match for Maryland. This old-timer still has a little pep!

I avoid going too much farther along Route 209, and I also stay out of the grass. I have a plan...first, though, I take a break from playing seriously to ride up and down Cycling Road for about two hours to maxmize :eevee: New York's friendship. The Vs. Seeker provided by John Adams helps him grow to Level 29 and he's promoted to Umbreon at last, learning both Bite and Confuse Ray. Simply beautiful. Then, I return to Route 209, with its curious ruin of crumbling stones. Along my journey I've written no fewer than 32 letters to my comrades in the fight for liberty, and my efforts are finally rewarded with the opportunity to speak with a most unusual and influential delegate.

The newly Dark-type New York :umbreon: is the perfect candidate to debate Spiritomb. Their match is brief, and my first thrown Great Ball does the trick! Now, had this spirit been female, I've no doubt she would have represented the Old Dominion State. As it stands, I'm faced with a male representative, a spirit both proud and rebellious, fearless and ancient. That speaks of only one man, and his namesake state.

Recruited Washington the male Spiritomb from Route 209!

That was a mightily impressive bit of statesmanship, if I do say so myself. Further north, Michigan :luxio: engages a patriot's Level 23 Ponyta. It Embers while I Charge, but then flinches me with Stomp, wasting my efforts. Still, with a five-level advantage, there's plenty of time to turn this around. The foe's Ponyta used Flame Wheel!...A critical hit!

Lost Michigan the Luxio :luxio:

Wh-what? No...not Michigan! She was my first real recruit, and only two levels away from evolving. This is crushing. I had no business losing anybody in such a minor skirmish, and now Oklahoma :grotle: has to face a raging, completely undamaged Fire-type. The fun isn't over; Ponyta uses Ember first and burns Oklahoma, causing his Bite to do only 25% of its HP. I'm going to lose a full pair again. We chip away at each other; Michigan's last gift to her partner was the Intimidate drop which is still active. One more Bite will do it but Oklahoma has just 8 HP. Ponyta uses Tail Whip, and I escape miraculously with only one death.

Solaceon Town is only a short distance away. There I must bid farewell to Michigan, who would have been one half of my ticket past anything Crasher Wake could throw at me. Oklahoma :grotle: refuses to partner with anyone except Georgia the female Wurmple :wurmple: despite a nasty shared weakness to Fire and Flying. It could be that they've both got a Quiet Nature--I hope they'll be able to get along like that. A Dustox would have slightly better defensive synergy, but I believe a Beautifly gets slightly more useful moves. Since Georgia is already late in terms of evolving, I decide to hold off on allowing her to do so until Level 15, when she picks up Bug Bite. At that point, I receive word that she's to be promoted into a Silcoon. That's fine with me, insofar as any of this is fine at all.

East of Solaceon Town are the Solaceon Ruins, where I'm told I may be able to sign another one of the agreements which allows me to travel to new areas. Sure enough, at its farthest depth I'm able to secure for myself the right to Defog, as well as picking up a Mind Plate for :bronzor: Pennsylvania. It then helps me recruit a Level 20 delegate so proud of his home, his entire shape takes after it. Helpfully, Pennsylvania is quite resistant to its lone method of attack. Let's see, the letter D...the only state beginning with that is already represented, as are all the states whose capitals start with D. I'll have to do the next best thing.

Recruited North Dakota the Unown D from Solaceon Ruins!

For now, the town holds little else of interest. I rest until nightfall, and then go to pay my respects at the cemetery tower to the south. My second conversation there is with a new delegate, a Level 19 Duskull. His being male is rather irritating. I'll take what I can get, but if any more female delegates from my company are lost, I'll be forced to call upon :unownd: North Dakota. That is not a comforting prospect. Anyway, it isn't easy to tell where the Duskull is from, but I decide it must be a rural state, one with dark, lonely, spooky nights.

Recruited Kansas the male Duskull from Lost Tower!

Maryland :psyduck: and New Mexico :ponyta: are able to take on the tower all by themselves, though we experience several close calls due to frankly terrible luck with confusion and multi-strike moves. Georgia :silcoon: remains equipped with the Exp. Share. At Level 16 she is promoted once again, into Beautifly. It's just in time for her to acquire the Defog skill which allows us to safely complete our climb. Stun Spore also follows soon thereafter.

My mission has undoubtedly experienced some setbacks recently. They'll have to work much harder to put me off my purpose, but for the moment, the orange-roofed tavern of Solaceon Town is beckoning me.

Most frustrating has to be any black or white Nuzlocke. I have been wiped out by N or Ghetsis in all my playthroughs. Any Critical hit aswell as it is just down to luck.

Hard update hope your grinding goes well.

Poor Colorado. Seeing a team member die to a wild Pokemon always hurts.
And Michigan, too. At least the Intinidate helped keep Oklahoma alive.
These loses suck, Ben. Keep your head up, though. Hopefully things will go better soon!
And Arceus: Please give ben some females. We don't need someone partnering up with an ADAMANT :unownd: . That's just adding insult to injury.

Qotd: I tried a Nuzlocke on Platinum myself years ago and kinda rage quit because of Fantina's gym. One of her trainers with a Haunter hit EVERY Hypnosis and put 5 of my 6 team members to sleep because no one was faster. 5 Hypnosis in a row. If my calculations are right, that's a .07% chance to happen.
I can't remember most of the team, but I had a Graveler and a Monferno named Piston. I didnt want to go into Piston, but everything else was asleep. I got got a Flame Wheel off, but the Haunter survived and got a crit Shadow Ball and killed Piston. And I just quit. I could have kept going, but that just pissed me off and I just lost all motivation to continue.

@Gokudera Losing Michigan was rough. I really liked her. Fortunately, I don't think I will be using North Dakota :unownd: any time soon.

With Georgia :beautifly: still 10 levels behind, I'm down to essentially 4 delegates on Route 210 north of Solaceon. Maryland :psyduck: engages a Ponyta and a Geodude, and I'm already mentally preparing a rant about Sinnoh's lack of diversity even in Platinum, when the third encounter is a male Noctowl! That's quite nice. I'm not particularly well versed in the owls of North America, so I can only roughly conclude that he represents Maine. Being the northernmost of the eastern states, Maine must experience some pretty long nights, which Noctowl would love.

Recruited Maine the male Noctowl from Route 210!

My almanac informs me that the northern section of Route 210 is so different from this area that I ought to be able to recruit somebody new there. For now, however, a coalition of Marylanders are staging a protest across the road, so I must limit myself to the southern section. Along the way, I am challenged by a pair of farmers: one with a Level 24 Ponyta and the other with a Level 24 Rapidash! By my belt buckle--the nerve of these people, unlawfully impersonating a senior officer! Justice is served (and my skin saved from these ruffians) when New Mexico :ponyta: dishes out two flinches in a row with Stomp so Maryland :psyduck: can hose them down with Water Pulse. It's also worth noting that a Collector with a Level 25 Heracross would have had no trouble finishing off New York :umbreon: and Pennsylvania :bronzor: with Brick Break, though he thankfully chose inferior tactics like Fury Attack and Counter. Governor Maylene could be trouble.

Georgia :beautifly: has been growing steadily, so before tackling Route 215, it's time for her to gain a few more levels. Consulting my almanac, I realize I could still get a Lake Verity recruit. Only Starly and Bidoof appear there, so it should be simple enough to nab a Bidoof and open up more possibilities via Dupes Clause later. Georgia takes the lead as we travel back through the region, detouring through Oreburgh City. I am so glad I made the decision to teach her Bug Bite, as otherwise Tackle and Poison Sting would be her only offensive options right now.

Lake Verity, as I said, yields Starly and Bidoof at a 50% chance each. Once there, I proceed to encounter three Starly in a row.

Lake Verity encounter failed.

It has to be a miracle that I've gone this far through a Sinnoh challenge without receiving Bidoof or Bibarel as a valid encounter, and it figures that the ONE TIME in my life I want one, I can't find one. As I trudge back along Routes 201, 202, and 203, I find no fewer than five Bidoof in a row. I love this country, but its citizens can be unimaginably stupid at times. One bright spot is that Georgia :beautifly: is handling herself quite well. The chance to learn Mega Drain greatly improves her Rock-type matchup and it isn't long before she's Level 25. That's good enough for now.

Route 215 is waiting for me and I'm up at the crack of dawn. A Mississippian is the first person to greet us, but after that comes a true challenger: a Level 20 female Scyther! She puts up quite a fight against :psyduck: Maryland, breaking out of the one Net Ball I have on hand, and Focus Energy and Pursuit make it too risky to call on New Mexico :ponyta: for help. Maryland and the Scyther push each other down to just a handful of HP remaining. It's giving me flashbacks to the Gible in Wayward Cave, but the difference here is that my delegate is slower than the challenger. If I can't catch her, I'm looking at a death. I offer a Nest Ball treaty...and she signs it! Florida is the most tropical region in the continental United States, so it must have some pretty big bugs. It also invokes some irony by way of Scyther's excellent matchup against Grass, and I live for my little puns and jokes.

Recruited Florida the female Scyther from Route 215!

There are plenty of Fighting-type specialists here, so Pennsylvania :bronzor: gets a nice workout. New York :umbreon: is also able to help against a pair of high-ranking ace soldiers at the end of the route, one of whom even commands an underleveled Drifblim. This impersonation is getting out of hand! It's a good thing I took them on one at a time rather than as a pair.

Veilstone City feels like I've stepped into New Hampshire, what with its isolation and emphasis on...stone. Nevertheless, it boasts the largest market in the country, and I make sure to stock up on the famous lemonade. In one of the houses, a foreign inventor seeking asylum begs to enter my service and place his talents at my disposal. I can't refuse such a generous offer! With his technological skills, I can only think of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Plus, it's not too far at all from New Hampshire!

Recruited Massachusetts the Porygon from Veilstone City!

My chief purpose in visiting this city, of course, is to secure Governor Maylene's assurance that she will support the revolution, but I'm not sure I'm up to the task yet. Through a combination of the Vs Seeker and the Unown in Solaceon Ruins, all of my delegates including Georgia :beautifly: train to Level 30. Amazingly, her Special Attack is the highest offensive stat in the party by a wide margin, though she still only has Mega Drain to make use of it. The practice finished, I head to the courthouse, where the legislators working for Maylene are waiting. Pennsylvania :bronzor: engages the first one, and it's a terrifying experience. It's a Steel-type as much as a Psychic-type, and even with a level advantage, three Machoke in a row deal huge damage. Pennsylvania is especially vulnerable to Low Kick and it's down to just 15 HP when the third Machoke, at Level 27, appears. If it hadn't inexplicably used Leer twice in a row, yielding to Extrasensory, the whole alliance would have crumbled.

That was a wake-up call. Maylene's level cap is 32 so I can still train a bit more, and Route 214 is open to me. In the side of a hill I find a beautifully dug mine shaft. The miner still inside says he just likes digging! There may be civilians here I could recruit, but my hopes aren't high, and I'm not bothered to find three Geodude in a row.

Maniac Tunnel encounter failed.

That's no matter; this is still a well-populated road. In the fields beyond the mine, a Level 24 Rhyhorn presents himself. He's quite a heavy hitter, so Maryland :psyduck: makes short work of convincing him to join our cause. A fellow who's been around since the beginning of our history, who takes on a huge and powerful form, and is oh-so-tough can only be from Texas.

Recruited Texas the male Rhyhorn from Route 214!

This time I'll make sure everyone's Level 31, and then go try my luck again in Veilstone. One of the patriots I train against has a Goldeen all the way at Level 30, equivalent to :psyduck: Maryland and :ponyta: New Mexico. They're not the pair I would have chosen for this job but they'll do fine, and Maryland scores a Defense drop with her first Rock Smash. My smile is wiped away when the opponent calls for Horn Drill. He must be joking...surely not? It's a one-hit KO!

Lost Maryland the Psyduck :psyduck:

They were both Level 30. That Goldeen's accuracy had no advantage at all; it was the base 30%. Maryland, you were the oldest surviving member who had maintained her alliance the whole time. I'm sorry. There was nothing I could have done. Enraged, New Mexico avenges his partner's death with a single crushing Take Down.

I had never anticipated spending so long here, but it can't be helped. In a daze, New Mexico :ponyta: and I both acknowledge that Florida the female Scyther :scyther: is the obvious choice for a new ally. She's only Level 20, but her Technician-boosted attacks are excellent, and replacing Focus Energy with Wing Attack just one level later accelerates her growth even further. At least now I know exactly how I'm going to handle Governor Maylene.

I finish my survey of Route 214 to raise everyone as far as Maylene will permit. Upon reaching Level 32, Oklahoma :grotle: is promoted into Torterra! He even learns Earthquake as a very nice bonus. I'm glad that I can still rely on him after all this time, and Georgia :beautifly: appreciates the added Rock resistance. Only Florida :scyther: trails behind when I return to work my way past Maylene's office staff, but she positively slaughters Fighting-types so it's no concern, and before I know it she's caught up anyway. I polish my spectacles and make my presence known to the governor.

Wing Attack oneshots Meditite. Wing Attack oneshots Machoke. Florida :scyther: is hit by Metal Claw for a third of her health, and then her Wing Attack scores a critical hit to oneshot Lucario. I've barely dipped my quill into the inkwell and Maylene is already affixing her signature.

Frank recevied the Cobble Badge!

I'd like to put my feet up for a moment and rest on my laurels, but fate has other ideas. Just outside, John Adams is waiting to tell me that the British blueheads have stolen the documents provided by General Washington! That just won't do, so I follow her to the garrison in the north of town. The two guards are no match for New Mexico :ponyta: even when attacking us two-on-one.

Though Lafayette appears to help us, we can't crack the bunker inside their fort. The one prize we do obtain is a charter for Fly, but sadly, none of my delegates have the capital to apply it. No matter. Lafayette's intel says that next I ought to travel to Pastoria City.

Damn OHKO moves. They are absolutely bull crap.
Especially if they hit at 30% first try. That's just wrong. At least an initial miss can give you time to plan...damn it.
That genuinely hurt to read. No pokemon deserves to die to an OHKO move.
That's two RNG deaths in a row. Apparently Arceus is a Brit.
A regular Benedict Arceus.

But the silver lining Florida was a female. Having to pair up with North Dakota would be devastating. Shame Florida isn't the Adamant one. That'd be absolutely perfect.
Imagine if this were Gen 8. Adamant Technician Dual Wingbeat would be terrifyingly deadly

@Crobad I'm so sorry I missed replying to you last time! Grinding is just part of the deal. I don't like it much but it's what I signed up for.
@Gokudera I agree that the OHKO move was really dumb. I'm so grateful to have Florida, though.

I canvassed all of Route 214 during my earlier preparations, so it's straight on to Valor Lakefront. I think this is a separate county from Lake Valor? It's hard to tell. Either way, I should be due for a new recruit, and New York :umbreon: artfully persuades a male Girafarig to give us his allegiance! Girafarig normally hails from the unspoilt, sparsely populated Johto region, which corresponds well to a territory known for its grazing herbivores here in this country.

Recruited Wyoming the male Girafarig from Valor Lakefront!

If this is Wyoming, then those buildings just ahead must be the famous Yellowstone National Park! It's an excellent place to stop and rest, as well as mingle with the crowd of people drawn from all over. Pennsylvania :bronzor: displays such prowess during one debate that it reaches Level 33 and is promoted into Bronzong! At last, the Liberty Bell! That comes with a nice boost to its offensive stats: a little too late to help against Maylene, but very reassuring moving forward.

My time at Yellowstone was enjoyable but I do have a schedule to keep. Route 213 even further south is unremarkable. While I'm here, it comes to my attention that since Maryland's untimely demise, the charter for Rock Smash has been inherited by :bronzong: Pennsylvania. Ever since learning Extrasensory, it's ignored Confusion entirely, so it takes up the burden with no fuss at all. Near the end of the road, Georgia :beautifly: is practicing her Stun Spore when a male Buizel pops up. Such enthusiasm is welcome! I know sea otters have a rather restricted range here. My hunch is confirmed when the almanac mentions something about slicing seaweed, which reminds me of...oregano? It's quite a stretch, but a stretch is all I need.

Recruited Oregon the male Buizel from Route 213!

The gates of Pastoria are wide open before me. This is a pleasant city, and it offers even more opportunities for recruits! Within the city limits proper, I gravitate to the waterside. Dockhands and fishermen know all the gossip, and my Good Rod soon leads me to a Level 11 female Magikarp. The strangest sensation comes over me while talking to her, as though spirits of the past are whispering into my ears. Sodium...and Hela...who could they be? No matter. This current individual, I sense, may be the butt of many jokes, but she's still proud and strong and not to be messed with.

Recruited Alabama the female Magikarp from Pastoria City!

That's still not the end of the ride! The Great Marsh Political Convention is in town, and here's how it works. As an event dedicated to bringing together patriots and statesmen from all over, it would be the height of folly for me to not meet at least one recruit. I'll go in there with all my cards on the table, attempting to recruit anyone and everyone. Whoever bites first will be the winner! That first encounter is a Tangela, who unfortunately doesn't hang around long. Next is a female Bibarel. I'm obligated to make my pitch, and she's in. I can't say I'm jazzed about this turn of events, but it's already a miracle I've made it this far through Sinnoh without finding a Bidoof or Bibarel, so I can accept it. There couldn't be any better home for this industrious woman than the Land of 10,000 Lakes.

Recruited Minnesota the female Bibarel from the Great Marsh!

By this point my whole company is Level 33, and I must say, I think we're in a very good place. I don't want to let my guard down but I'm feeling solid. I think I'll mosey on over to Route 212 and see what's kicking in that neck of the woods.

Approaching from the north, I have to work my way past several local constables. They don't pose a threat to me, and it does my heart good to see these proud Americans keeping the law. A bit past them, Georgia :beautifly: befriends an equally graceful and beautiful female delegate, a Level 23 Roselia! Her elegant roses are like the fleur-de-lis symbol of a lovely state known for its French culture, Louisiana.

Recruited Louisiana the female Roselia from Route 212!

Perhaps the most famous attraction of this route is Monticello, the home of the illustrious Thomas Jefferson. At his gracious invitation, we're allowed to make use of the property as necessary on our diplomatic missions, so I stop by for a tour. Among the many delegates is a zippy young man whom most everyone seems to recognize. His high-voltage energy must come from all the carnival-like vacation attractions of his state, and I imagine his face is so well-known due to his proximity to one of the most iconic symbols of the American ideal, the Statue of Liberty.

Recruited New Jersey the male Pikachu from the Trophy Garden!

There's no denying that Route 212 is a rather lengthy slog, but it gives me a greater appreciation for our troops in the field. A few of my own battles are worth a mention. New York :umbreon: finds himself up against a delegate who could be his twin! The other is only Level 27, but I shudder to think how long the fight may have dragged on had Pennsylvania :bronzong: not already taken up Rock Smash. Then, while crossing a lake, Oklahoma :torterra: is engaged by a Fisherman and his Level 29 Gyarados. The combination of Intimidate and Dragon Rage on a naturally resilient enemy is quite fearsome, so I'm counting my blessings that Razor Leaf's high crit chance kicked in on the second turn. Somewhere along the way, Georgia :beautifly: hits Level 34 and attempts to learn Silver Wind. This is a great move thanks to her Quiet Nature, but she declines the technique. I simply don't think there's space on her roster: Defog can't be forgotten, Stun Spore and Mega Drain have proven their utility, and Bug Bite is more reliable due to having far more PP. Georgia's Special Attack is excellent, but her Attack isn't bad either.

Continuing on, New Mexico :ponyta: keeps up the pace well in spite of the constant rain, and Florida :scyther: is as much of a powerhouse as ever. With all the disputes resolved here, we shake the swamp mud from our feet and troop back into Pastoria City from the west, just in time to harvest an excellent crop of Lum Berries.

It's time to scope out what "Crasher" Wake has in store for us, but as I approach the local courthouse, Alex appears! He makes a special point of not colliding with me this time, which I appreciate. As usual, he's here to test his skills, and I'm happy to oblige. New Mexico :ponyta: trades a few blows with Alex's Staravia and emerges victorious. Then, Florida :scyther: is able to take out Buizel, Monferno, and Roselia with one Wing Attack apiece. I am so glad we made the decision to purchase that territory from Spain. My conclusion: Alex's skills need work.

Training everyone up to Level 37 in preparation for taking on the Pastoria governor is a breeze. My heart nearly stops when a Clefairy uses Metronome against New Mexico :ponyta: to summon HEAD SMASH of all things, but he survives with 11 HP. It's still not nearly as scary as the upcoming confrontation with Wake, which has me very worried. Gyarados is terrifying for a number of reasons and Floatzel is terrifying mostly thanks to Ice Fang. I have to think long and hard about the best way to proceed. Eventually I decide to teach Pennsylvania :bronzong: Grass Knot, as well as Natural Gift from a TM purchased in Veilstone City, and to equip it with the Wacan Berry provided to me by a woman in the city. New York :umbreon: upgrades to Payback via TM. I think that's all I can do.

The battle opens with Pennsylvania :bronzong: against Gyarados. Waterfall deals hefty damage, but what really crushes me is when the Electric-type Natural Gift deals only half of Gyarados's health. How is that possible? A second Waterfall leaves Pennsylvania unable to take a third, while Grass Knot pushes Gyarados into the red. I call upon New York :umbreon: while Crasher Wake does some first aid on his delegate. We trade Waterfalls and Paybacks until Gyarados faints. We had the resolve to never flinch, which is fortunate, but both of my allies are critically weakened. Next is Floatzel, the ace of this team. New York survives Ice Fang with 6 HP and does enough with Payback that Floatzel is barely above half health even after consuming its Sitrus field rations. But then, there's nothing more I can do. Aqua Jet pierces New York like a lance.

Lost New York the Umbreon :umbreon:

The situation is little better for Pennsylvania :bronzong: despite its desire for vengeance. Crunch knocks it to a mere handful of health while Floatzel is walloped by Extrasensory. Crasher Wake again breaks out a medical kit. Pennsylvania desperately unleashes another Extrasensory, the adrenaline letting it score a critical hit...Floatzel's HP plummets, but it hangs on by the merest shred. Aqua Jet, which took the first partner, now takes the second one to reunite them in death.

Lost Pennsylvania the Bronzong :bronzong:

Oklahoma :torterra: would be the logical next choice against a Water-type opponent but I don't trust his ability to withstand Ice Fang. It has to be :beautifly: Georgia. Crasher Wake doesn't let up. Ice Fang steals 75% of Georgia's health but she keeps her cool, doesn't flinch or freeze under pressure, and puts the villain in his place with Mega Drain. The much weaker Quagsire is no match for Oklahoma.

Frank received the Fen Badge!

People sometimes wonder how New York City didn't become the capital of our nation. They wonder how the Liberty Bell received its massive crack. Well, now you know. Sometimes heroes, no matter how great, have to be left in the past. I'm going to miss these two. They were solid and reliable, surprising me at times with their capabilities, and they fought well for one another.

As we exit the building, Alex appears to inform both of us that a British agent has been seen in the city plotting a terrible act of sabotage. Even if our internal squabbles are bitter, an event like this reminds us all of why we're fighting and that we're on the same side in the end. They urge me to go with them, and I will, but first I need a moment to bid my comrades adieu.

Not sure what to say for this one. School and all its associated responsibilities will be starting in a couple days, so my update schedule will get much slower. Are there any sort of general critiques/comments/suggestions you'd like to offer about the run so far?

Thank Arceus you had New Mexico in against that Clefairy.
Florida would have been destroyed by that Head Smash. Though I do like to imagine Clefairy little hair floof ahoge thingy glowing using Head Smash and just charging forward. That's quality nightmare fuel right there.

Damn it. Those loses hurt. There wasn't much tou could really do, but that's still not easy.
I am curious to see the new team, though. A Modest Roselia is a fantastic Nature, and pairing it with a Spiritomb could be good.

QotD: I dont have any critiques. I actually love the way this is structured. The updates are a good length, I love the way you write the story, and I love the characters you're using to represent everyone. (Though the Marquis de Lafayette was exponentially more helpful than Looker ever is. Hell, if he he Looker's competence, we'd probably all be drinking tea and crumpets and watching cricket on the tele lmao).
This is fantastic so far!
