So I made this thread on the previous forums, but I figured I'd make it here, too! What are some things that your city, or the big city near you, or the signature city of the state that you live in, is known for?

I don't live IN Philadelphia, but I live roughly ~25 miles from it. Obviously there are the sports stadiums in Citizens Bank Park (Phillies, which got a BIG overhaul during the offseason), Wells Fargo Center (Sixers and Flyers, also got some big changes), and Lincoln Financial Field (Eagles), all of which are pretty nice stadiums. But there are other cool things like the Franklin Institute (a science museum), the Philadelphia Zoo (America's first ever zoo!), Penn's Landing (riverside, some cute exhibits), City Hall (where the Declaration of Independence was signed), and the Liberty Bell. And its signature food is the cheesesteak, which is more famous here than anywhere else. There are plenty of other things going for it in Philly, but those are some of the first that come to mind.

How about you? What's in your city? What would you suggest as recommendations to someone visiting to make sure they check out if they want to have fun? Discuss!

The closest city to me is Portland, which is about 140 miles away. Portland's well known for it's hipsters and bookstores. There's also a pretty Japanese garden there as well.

My city is known for a film that misrepresents how we talk and College Football. Though some people also know about our iconic theatre, but that's not as common knowledge.

Sydney is most well known for the Opera House and Harbour Bridge. There's also waterside life like Darling Harbour and the circular quay. Nearby Sydney is also the Blue Mountains and the Jenolan Caves. Other things Sydney is known for is the ferries, fireworks, seafood and Sydney Tower.

My city is best known for a massive gold nugget found within our border, which we have a parade for. Controversy arises between my city and a nearby town, about where the gold nugget was 'actually' found.

the actual “city” i live in is supposedly really safe and is known for that. meanwhile, the closest actual city to me is madison and that place is known for having a lot of drug addicts and it’s really shady so it’s kinda ironic lol

if you ever go to madison, skip everything but the malls and then you’re not missing out on much

The city I live in is probably most known for its children's zoo. I think that's the most popular thing, at least. Indiana isn't exactly known for its major attractions, much less my city.

Really, the #1 thing that Edmonton is known for is its mall. West Edmonton Mall is actually the largest mall in all of North America, so there is that. Aside from WEM, we're known for the Edmonton Oilers (NHL team for those who aren't in the know), who play in Rogers Place. There's some things after that, but those are the main two I can name off the top of my head.

my city is known for gambling primarily. :L

I live in Reno, Nevada. Gambling is legal in Nevada and Reno is right on the border to California so people from there come here to gamble. We have tons of casinos. But what people don't know is it's a lot more homey and cozy than las vegas, with beautiful mountains and tons of nature to get lost in. I don't particularly like it just because of how trashy it gets with all the casinos and drunk people, but it has its nice features too.

Memphis isn't a city with a great reputation, but avoid certain parts of the city and you'll be fine. We are mainly known for the

ELVIS

But there is a fair amount of things to do, ranging from all the best barbecue you can find in the South, a great, vibrant musical scene, and civil rights history. Also St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and a giant pyramid that is weirdly owned by Bass Pro Shops.

My city is known for college basketball and that's about it lol.
You keep telling me about things like the first Pizza Hut and bring me to where it is to check it out and don't even mention it here? smh

I spent several days at a conference in Madison a year ago. The downtown area is actually quite nice and hip, and the University of Wisconsin has a pretty campus. The lakeshore is actually a great sight. Don't sell the city that short.

My nearest city is known for a Premier League football club and also for being where Liam from One Direction is from.

In the town where I live we have a Living Museum that's pretty good, and a zoo right next door, as well as an entertainment park where there's a cinema, bowling alley and various restaurants. There's a large shopping centre not too far from the town centre, and the town was also at the heart of the industrial revolution as it was known for manufacturing.

We've got the Little League World Series every year up where I live. Nice music scene, downtown, and history in the area as well.

Plus Knoebels' amusement park is an hour away and if you haven't gone WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH YOUR LIFE?!

My city is known for being 20 years behind the rest of the country and our bell tower that's no bigger than a 4 story apartment building, surrounded by 40+ story office buildings.

The biggest things here are the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, NASA/Space Center Houston, and the Museum District, I would say.

What's Birmingham (the English one, not the one in Alabama) known for?

Least favourite and most mocked accent in Britain.

We pretty much sorta maybe kinda invented balti. We've got tons of balti restaurants at least.

Umm, that wacky Selfridges building in the town centre, looks like an alien blob.

Chocolate! Cadbury World, which is basically like a museum exhibition kinda thing of chocolate. Been years since I went actually, I should go again. Chocolate!

Football teams that used to be good and now ... not so much. Still Villa Til I Die.

It's got more canals than Venice don't you know all the tour guides say. Yeah but ours are all dank and slimy and full of shopping trolleys. Actually there's some nice bits round Brindleyplace in the town centre that have all been redeveloped and stuff.

Tolkein grew up round here.

We've got the original "Spaghetti Junction", if you're driving into or out of Birmingham there's a good chance you'll go through it. (It's actually no big deal at road level, just follow the signs.)

The NEC's on the edge of town near the airport, big exhibition expo centre kind of place. They hold some cool stuff sometimes. Used to do the UK nationals of the Pokemon VGC there, until Stuff Happened.

If all else fails, you could always spend the night up Broad Street getting wasted.

Ah, you should probably know the 2 places I mentioned in my post then (#13) :p

I'm not that far away from Brum, so I know first hand about the accent; I don't think it's that bad, it's probably worse in my area if I'm honest. You don't have too many Brummies on Jeremy Kyle after all!

You also have Ozzy Osbourne and the location of the original 'Gladiators' to your credit :)
