Male Character

Officially known as Pete, in the story of Friends of Mineral Town, you originally came to the farm when you were young, and met the old man who owned the farm. When you arrive years later, you find out the old man had passed away, and had given the farm over to you in his will. You also met a girl when you were younger, who could be any of the bachelorettes in Mineral Town. (Aside from secret ones)

In this remake, the story takes more from Back to Nature, where the owner of the farm was your grandfather. Now around 20 years old, you were contacted by the Mayor to come to Mineral Town in the hopes of inheriting your grandfather's farm.

In this remake, you can choose the classic look, or go for a more trendy look. The new look character is officially named Yuto.

Female Character

Officially known as Claire, in the story of More Friends of Mineral Town, you originally lived in the city, but found an advertisement for a new life in the country - which led to you deciding to quit your job. Once you arrive, however, you find the farm in dire straits. Not to mention, the Mayor laughs in your face about being tricked by the cheesy ad. After venting your frustration onto the mayor, you can choose whether or not to start working on the farm.

In the remake, your story is the same as the male counterpart.

In this remake, you can choose the classic look, or go for a more trendy look. The new look character is officially named Naomi.

Thomas

Thomas is the current mayor of Mineral Town and cares a great deal for its residents. He gives you the farm at the start of the game, and manages the events that occur in Mineral Town. As a side note though, he is afraid of dogs.

Carter

Carter is Mineral Town's local priest. You can go to him for confessions and advice, and he also weds you and your chosen bachelor/bachelorette.

Ellen

The grandmother of Elly and Yu, Ellen is often very sick, and is confined to a chair. Despite this, she watches over Yu while Elly works at the Clinic.

Saibara

Gray's grandfather, Saibara is Mineral Town's blacksmith. He is gruff and very serious about his work. You can go to him to upgrade your tools.

Harris

Harris is Mineral Town's local police officer and Thomas's son. Rain or shine - aside from festivals - you can see Harris patrolling Mineral Town's streets. Funnily enough, he has a crush on Duke and Manna's daughter, Adge (Aja in the original).

Jeff

Jeff is the husband of Sasha and father of Karen. He runs Mineral Town's General Store. He's mild-mannered, and even sometimes gets anxiety-induced ulcers.

Sasha

Sasha is Jeff's wife and Karen's mother, and co-runs the General Store. Like her daughter, however, she'd much prefer to be outdoors.

Lillia

Lillia is the mother of Rick and Popuri, and runs the PoPoultry Farm. She suffers from chronic poor health, which is why her husband Rod left Mineral Town many years ago in search of a cure. She is a close friend of Sasha.

Anna

The wife of Basil and mother of Marie, Anna is surprisingly very sophisticated for a stay-at-home mother. At least she has Sasha and Mana as friends to gossip with. She's great at making all kinds of desserts.

Basil

Marie's father and Anna's husband, Basil is a world famous botanist and a writer - with most of the library's books being written by him. These books can be very useful to the player, as they give many tips on farming, livestock, and nature.

Manna

Manna is Duke's wife, and runs Adge Winery with him. When she's not at home, she can be found with Anna and Sasha in Rose Square, gossiping away. Duke and Manna frequently argue over Duke's drinking and Manna's gossiping. Manna misses her daughter, Adge, and often blames Duke that she has not come home.

Duke

Manna's Husband, Duke runs the Adge Winery. He is proud of his business, and willing to give advice. Unfortunately, Duke and his daughter Adge - who the Winery is named after - got into an argument years ago which caused Adge to leave Mineral Town. Neither Duke nor Adge will apologize, and she unfortunately hasn't come home.

Dudley

The father of Ran, Dudley (Doug in the original) runs Mineral Town's inn. His wife passed away years ago, and he was left to raise Ran on his own. Dudley sometimes feels that his daughter's tomboy nature will prevent her from getting married, but he loves her nonetheless.

Mugi

Mugi (Barley in the original) is Mei's grandfather and runs the Yodel Ranch. He gives you a Horse in the first year, and also sells livestock - aside from chickens and the like - as well as animal supplies. Make sure you bond with the Horse, or Mugi will take it back.

Gotts

Gotts (Gotz in the original) is a woodcutter who lives south of your farm. You can go to him in order to upgrade your house, or buy other houses - provided you have the gold, lumber and stone.

Zack

At 5pm every day, Zack will arrive at your farm to collect that day's shipment - your source of money in Mineral Town. Aside from that, you can find him in one of the houses on Mineral Beach.

Mei

Mei (May in the original) is a cute and energetic girl who lives with her grandfather Mugi at Yodel Ranch, and can often be found playing with Yu at the Church. She loves her grandfather, although she misses her mother Joanna who left and never returned. Nevertheless, she tries her best to be a good help on the Ranch.

Yu

Yu (Stu in the original) is one of the only children in the village. He can often be seen playing with Mei near the Church, and visiting with Carter. He is a high energy child who loves to play pranks on his older sister, Elly. When he's not out playing, he is at his grandmother's house. He keeps Ellen company, and she loves seeing Yu's high energy.

Van

Van is a travelling merchant from Forget-Me-Not Valley. He'll come to Mineral Town after you give the Harvest Goddess 30 offerings, and will sell different items and even pets on the 15th of each month - just not on Festival Days.

Lou

Lou, like Van, comes from Forget-Me-Not Valley. After giving 75 offerings to the Harvest Goddess, Lou will come to Mineral Town. If you befriend her, you can get more recipes.

The Nature Sprites

Originally called the Harvest Sprites, these little guys can be found behind Carter's church, budum. Not only that, but if you befriend them, they can help out on the farm, budum.

Rick

A young man who runs the PoPoultry Farm with his family, Rick is basically considered the head of the household, having to deal with his sick mother Lillia and his naive sister Popuri. He apparently takes issue that Popuri likes to spend her summers with Kai - leading to Rick and Kai not liking each other - and he also tries to maintain his long standing relationship with Karen. His temper can be short, but deep down, he means well.

Romance Rival: Karen

Cliff

A wandering traveller who found himself in Mineral Town, Cliff is somewhat standoffish, shy and distant from everyone. He is especially shy around Ran. Often visiting the Church, he stays on the second floor of the Inn. If you can convince him to stay in Mineral Town, he may find a happy life here.

Romance Rival: Ran

Gray

An apprentice blacksmith and Saibara's grandson, Gray originally came from the city to live in Mineral Town, where he constantly strives to gain his grandfather's approval - who unfortunately has very high expectations for him. He may seem angry, but has a sweet side should you get to know him. When he meets Marie, however, he is incredibly smitten by her.

Romance Rival: Marie

Doctor

As is obvious, the Doctor is Mineral Town's Doctor, and he works at the Clinic six days a week, helping the citizens of Mineral Town. A very caring person, the Doctor is always focused on his job, and striving to succeed. As such, he is frustrated with patients like Ellen and Lillia, as he cannot cure their illnesses. His assistant nurse, Elly, has feelings for him, but he is somehow completely oblivious to it.

Romance Rival: Elly

Kai

Only showing up in Mineral Town during the summer, Kai runs the Beach Cafe (Seaside Shack in the original) on Mineral Beach. Friendly to everyone in Mineral Town - except for Rick - he is much more interested in soaking up the summer sun.

Romance Rival: Popuri

Brandon

A new bachelor for this remake, Brandon is a genius artist who lodges at Gotts's cabin after the woodcutter found him collapsed in the woods. He only thinks about his own works at all times and does not care about his surroundings. Although he is silent and not too communicative with other people, it doesn't mean he hates them. In fact, he can't ignore someone who is a fellow lover of the arts.

Popuri

The daughter of Lillia and sister of Rick, Popuri is a naive bubbly girl who works at her family's Poultry Farm - called PoPoultry. She admires more worldly individuals such as Karen and Kai - who she has a massive crush on - and is the only one in Mineral Town with a large sweet tooth.

Romance Rival: Kai

Karen

The daughter of Jeff and Sasha, Karen's family runs the town's supermarket. However, Karen herself prefers to be out in the town than helping with the local business. Quite the romantic, Karen enjoys wine - often having drinking contests with Duke - and long walks on the beach. She also enjoys cooking, but is incredibly hopeless at it. Having a long time friendship with Rick, it might progress into romance...

Romance Rival: Rick

Elly

Ellen's granddaughter and Yu's elder sister, Elly (Elli in the original) is a nurse and works at Mineral Town's clinic. Despite her hardships due to her parents dying years ago, Elly remains a kind and patient individual, and visits her grandmother on her days off. Having formed a crush with her boss, the Doctor, she is frustrated that he remains completely oblivious to it.

Romance Rival: Doctor

Marie

The daughter of Anna and Basil, Marie (Mary in the original) runs the library, with dreams of one day becoming a writer - and is currently working on her own novel. A shy girl, she admires her father's work with botany. She feels rather sad that not many people in Mineral Town take advantage of the library, and only has a few friends in town - being Gray, Saibara and Carter.

Romance Rival: Gray

Ran

The daughter of Dudley, Ran (Ann in the original) works as a cook, waitress and maid at her father's inn. As Ran is quite a tomboy, her father worries that these traits would affect her marriage in the future - which Ran is frustrated about her father pushing her. Despite this, the two maintain a close relationship after her mother's death. A friendly girl, Ran is a hard worker and loves to cook - and is very good at it, too.

Romance Rival: Cliff

Jennifer

A new bachelorette exclusive to this remake, Jennifer is a girl who went out of the city to have a wandering journey. She really likes living within the vast nature, so she lives in a mountain tent. She is very positive and does things at her own pace.

Harvest Goddess

The Harvest Goddess lives in the pond next to the town's Hot Springs. She appears after you throw an item into the pond. This is considered "giving an offering" to her, and anything that you throw in the pond can be considered to be a gift! As a secret Bachelorette, she has special requirements for you to be able to marry her.

Kappa

Kappa lives in the lake. He appears each time you throw a cucumber into the lake, and rarely, you may accidentally catch him while fishing. Like with the Harvest Goddess, Kappa has special requirements in order to be married.

Bon Vivant

Also known as The Gourmet, Bon Vivant judges the Cooking Festival - and was a secret bachelor in More Friends of Mineral Town - having special requirements to marry him. Like his name, he is obsessed with food.

Huang

A travelling salesman - and named Won in the original games, Huang sells you things on the 4th of every month, and has a shop in Zack's House on the beach. His shop has different stock from the General Store, and - if you befriend him (female only in the original) - you can sell him things that you can not normally ship. As a secret bachelor, he has special requirements in order to marry him.

Thanks to two interviews, more information on the game has come out.

Features from Back to Nature, character customisation, the Best Friends system (which may or may not still be in the western release depending on the freaking publisher), and both Seedling and Veteran modes making a return from Story of Seasons and Trio of Towns. Not that I'll play this remake in Seedling Mode, mind you - despite money making being easier and the Town villa being easier to get (rather than being 100,000,000g and 999 lumber)

As well, you can play "in your own favourite way". I'm not sure whether this means you can go full on crops, full on livestock, or full on mining and still thrive, but I feel like that's what it is.

As well, the new secret bachelor, Brandon, has been revealed. I'll... update the thing with the full art when it shows up.

A new trailer has come out, showing a bit more of the game - including music such as the Spring Theme, Fall Theme, and even the Festival Theme.

Also, I've updated the character list to include Brandon's full art, as well as the secret bachelorette, Jennifer. All that leaves is, well, Kappa, Gourmet, Won, the Harvest Goddess... shoot, there's a bit there.

Secondly, this is not confirmed, but apparently, some character names might change. Not sure though (Those being Ann to Ran and Mary to Marie. And Doug to Dadd or something). Again, not confirmed, but I hope to Gaia (the Harvest Goddess, and I really don't mind this change because this happened back in Story of Seasons) that XSEED doesn't change their names for the English release.

UPDATE: The second post has been updated with... probably most of the characters that have been shown - if not all. Secondly, the creators did another interview, and here are the highlights: (https://www.siliconera.com/2019/09/19/story-of-seasons-friends-of-mineral-town-director-on-best-friends-new-looks-and-returning-bugs/ )

  • The new redesigns are due to the original Friends of Mineral Town being over 16 years old. The developers said that - due to FoMT being the first Story of Seasons game on Switch, they wanted new players who didn't recognise the old characters to have fun as well, examples being Gray and Saibara.
  • The new protagonist designs are cosmetic, and make more sense in that the characters came from the city - and wouldn't automatically be in farmer's clothes at the beginning (of course, we have the original designs, too). The new designs were made for people who wanted to be "more trendy".
  • For DLC with the classic character designs, the devs aren't sure if that will be possible - the original artist's artstyle has changed since the original games.
  • Some events will have changes due to being a remake, and some will be removed, but more robust events will be added. (Giron's thoughts: I think we'll see more post-marriage events and other romantic events)
  • The Best Friends system introduced in DS Cute (same-sex marriage) will return (and knowing XSEED, will make it to the west) but will be probably named something different in other localisations. It's returning to emphaise "players living freely".
  • Children will grow a bit older than before, but not beyond the age of previous games (Giron's thoughts: maybe somewhere around the age the children in Story of Seasons are). Divorcing will not be possible.
  • Some bugs have been patched, while others have been properly implemented.
    • The infinite relationship points on birthdays has been removed.
    • Infinite fishing on Beach Day has been implemented (fish to your heart's content!)
  • There are new areas to explore. Original areas have remained relatively unchanged, aside from the shifting of some obtainable items.
  • There is no TV Shopping Network - so stuff like the Large Bed and Kitchen are purchasable through other methods. To keep the countryside appeal, though, there's no internet or online shopping service - hence the player getting a record player rather than a CD or MP3 player (though they did consider it)
  • Like before, NPC birthdays will be changed if the player has the same birthday.

The new title is a bit confusing because of the series changing developers, but I’m really looking forward to this! I’m glad they’re adding same-sex marriage into the game. Giving players more options is always a nice thing to see. The new character portraits are so clean and pleasing to look at. They easily redeem the rest of the game’s simplistic visuals.

It's still made by Marvelous - the same developers. Natsume - the original publisher - just owns the "Harvest Moon" name in the west (and nothing else - seeing as Natsume's Harvest Moon games are subpar). XSEED's basically the localiser/new publisher since Marvelous and Natsume split. Which is why we got Story of Seasons.

The translated version of the name was "Reunion in Mineral Town" ("Saikai no Mineraru Taun" - as opposed to the original's "Mineraru Taun no Nakama-tachi"), but XSEED put the western title as "Friends of Mineral Town" - which is a big flip off to Natsume. Even though Natsume doesn't even own the title "Friends of Mineral Town".

Now that I think about it, it's entirely possible for the characters names to change - since Licorice in SoS was Reina in Tale of Two Towns, and Kamil was Cam. Well... I hope they don't change their names, but we'll see.

UPDATE: The game is out now in Japan! You can find playthroughs of about 20-40 minutes of the game. Some things to note:

  • The beginning of the game takes cues from Back to Nature, but both male and female are given the choice whether or not to keep the farm. I haven't seen anyone refuse, so... yeah.
  • You start off with 4 tool slots (maximum of 12) and 8 item slots (maximum of 24) - items do stack up to 9 in your regular slots. As well, you can choose what items to put into the Shipping box. But remember, 5pm sharp!
  • When using tools, it shows you the area which you are aimed at - and for seeds, it shows a 3x3 area.
  • Unlike the original game, hammering rocks gives you stone, which will more than likely also serve as fencing rather than just rocks. You can probably still use rocks as fences, so who really knows. It's probably also used for upgrading the house instead of just gold and lumber.
  • You start off with 150 stamina (each berry/heart is 15 stamina), and each starting tool usage uses 2 stamina. Like the original, you can upgrade this by getting Power Berries (make sure to hoe the entire farm in order to get one of these - yes, there's one in the farm)
  • At the end of each day, a status screen (like in Stardew Valley) comes up to show your shipment earnings for the day.
  • Crops now have star ratings. I'm not entirely sure how that will work or how to upgrade those.
  • When you've used a tool enough, a text box with a little jingle comes up to tell you you've reached the tool's next level - and are able to upgrade it.
  • Rather than going to the different tables at the supermarket, you can just talk to Jeff to get seeds and farming supplies - other tables can probably be interacted in order to buy stuff like ingredients and wrapping paper. (EDIT: No need, just talk to Jeff for everything)
  • There's a new forest-y area connecting northern and southern Mineral Town, but I'm not sure what's there. There's also a new small park south of the church.
  • The water pool has moved from south of the shipping box to right near the northern entrance.
  • Seedling mode automatically starts you with some crops in the field.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: I'll update this as soon as XSEED confirms the American date, but we have a European/Australian date for the game.

Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town will launch digitally and physically in Europe and Australia on July 10, 2020.

The new name changes ARE confirmed (though I still have to see if they go for Dadd or Dudley in terms of Doug), but that font is really nice, like really nice.

Well, the game's been out for about a week on both sides of the world, and I've been going through it pretty... quickly, I guess. I'm in Winter Y1 at the moment. Here's the things I've done and noticed:

  • You can't throw items with A anymore. You can put them in shipping Bins and such and they get shipped, but you can no longer throw them on the ground and they disappear. Instead, there's a discard option in the Bag screen.
  • Rival Marriages are gone. It sucks a little, but Rivals only have the first two events, and can't marry each other.
  • I believe it was the same in the original, that you could jump straight up to the next level/s if you have the materials to upgrade your tools, it just takes more time.
  • While I haven't gotten everything to Mythril level, I'll just say that, once again, the Lake Mine is your friend in Winter. Also, make sure to have an Orange Tree - don't ask how, but oranges grow in winter.
  • The LCD TV is kinda optional. It just increases the screen size - the pixelated shows are just as pixelated.
  • You have to learn the recipe in order to make something. You can't experiment this time around.
  • Preserved Flowers cost 1000G - and you need 12 of them in order to get the "I Choose You" achievement (Marry after showing the flower to all 12 candidates - secret ones don't count)
  • While I haven't really focused on the Nature Sprites, they all like Wheat Flour and the grass that's the same colour as them.
  • I've sorta messed around with the Record player, but not much.
  • It's super super easy to get 3 Power Berries in the first year, as well as the Blue Power Berry
  • I haven't bought a pet yet, so I won't be getting the one from the Beach Day in Year 2.
Bear in mind, I'm playing in Normal Mode - so that means everything is classic. Biggest house requires 600 Lumber and 250 Stone, iirc.
