Hello again, people. I know I still have another challenge here, but I've been wanting to do a scramble challenge in Platinum. Since I'm going to bring up the string sextet theme (again), this will be like a String Hexalocke without the "broken instrument" rule (a.k.a. death rule in the regular Nuzlocke).

Rules:

1. Just like a real-life string sextet, I can only have 2 violinists (violin players), 2 violists (viola players), and 2 cellists (cello players) in my party. The grouping will be based on primary types a.k.a. the type listed first in a dual-type Pokemon, so here's the list:

Since this is Platinum, just omit the fairy type in the viola part.
I've already asked for the players (read: the main party) beforehand and these are what people gave me:
Violin: :gastrodon::gastrodoneast: (from @Moxie) and :luxray: (from @~Kilza~)
Viola: :crobat: (from @Kaori) and :kricketune: (from @icelandic)
Cello: :rampardos: (from @Calaf) and :bronzong: (from @Typhlosion)

2. I must name all the players. In this case, I'll name them after whoever gave them to me in the first place and make sure to match the Pokemon's gender with the recommenders while I'm at it (well, except :bronzong: because it's already genderless to begin with. Sorry about that, @Typhlosion :pensiveazurill:). I don't wanna misgender anyone, after all. :winkazurill:

3. HM buddies may be caught but they can't battle once the main players are fully assembled. This is to avoid the hassle of being unable to forget HM moves without going to the Move Deleter. I still can raise them just enough to learn more HMs, though.

Well, that's all for the introduction. I hope you all gonna enjoy it. :happyazurill:

At @Calaf's suggestion, I had to restart several times until my trainer ID's last digit is odd-numbered. Quite boring indeed, but I need it for his suggested cellist, :rampardos:. And that being said, just let's start already.
  • Started up the game as a girl and named her Ami. As for her rival, his name is Takumi. Those names are taken from the protagonists in Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth, Takumi and Ami Aiba (they share the same surname btw). Pretty random names, huh?
  • Ami was in her bedroom watching TV when the super excited Takumi invited her to go to Professor Rowan and ask him for some Pokemon
  • Got out to Route 201 only to bump into the professor and his assistant, Lucas
  • Chose  as her "starter" (well, more like her temporary starter since none of the choices are in her what-to-get list)
  • Battled Takumi at his request and barely won
  • Went to Sandgem Town, got a Pokedex and TM Return (I can't remember the numbering), gotten schooled by Lucas of all people, and finally can catch stuffs (technically)
  • Told her mom back home about whatever happened and had to deliver a parcel to Takumi from his mom
  • Went to Sandgem Town (again) only to get schooled by Lucas for some more time
  • Got Kilza the violinist :shinx: boy at Route 202
  • Met Lucas again right after arriving at Jubilife City, then both met Looker just when he was going to show her the Trainer School
  • Delivered the parcel to Takumi at school
  • Got Kaori the violist :zubat: girl at Route 204
  • Battled Takumi at Route 203 with an awkward clash between Kilza :shinx:'s Leer vs :turtwig:'s Withdraw
  • Got a :bidoof: as her second HM buddy (her first one is the  from before)
Violinist
:shinx: Kilza (Boy)
Level: 11
Ability: Intimidate
Nature: Docile
Moves: Tackle, Leer, Charge

Violist
:zubat: Kaori (Girl)
Level: 10
Ability: Inner Focus
Nature: Quirky
Moves: Leech Life, Supersonic, Astonish
Given the squad as of now, I'm not sure if I can deal with the first gym with only the main players, so I might need some help from my HM buddies ( and :bidoof:). If I do use them, sorry. :pensiveazurill:

Well, considering it's a Scramble and not a Locke, you could level your party first and try beating Roark, and if it turns out to be too hard, get your HM buddies to join. At least you would've tried with the team you've been given ^^

It would probably be difficult, but if you use Intimidate, Leer and Bite right, you might be able to do it!

I think that if you make note that you may be using something else (such as me in my mono grass playthrough letting myself use Panpour if I had an issue) that it will be okay

You could get Kricketot too, but it probably won't be much help against rock types. I don't suppose you can get up to route 205 for Shellos yet?

@Kaori @Calaf sorry for bursting your bubbles, but I don't think the Bite part works. I mean, this is Platinum, so :shinx: gets Bite at level 17 instead of 13. Or did you guys mean :zubat:'s Bite instead of :shinx:'s? I'm asking this because :zubat: gets Bite at level 13, so... :pensiveazurill:

@SkylarAlpha well, I kinda went ahead with HM buddies helping out. However, taking on one of Roark's Pokemon with my main squad is already quite a feat for me. :hmmazurill:

@LRachelR5 yeah, that's what I did there. Good thing I made a forewarning back then. :happyazurill:

@icelandic nah, can't do. I need Rock Smash just to reach the upper half of Route 204, let alone Route 205. I also have a tough luck for :kricketot: as of now, so... :cryingazurill:

  • Went through Oreburgh Gate and arrived at Oreburgh City
  • Met Takumi in front of the gym only to find out that the gym leader's going out
  • Found Roark, the gym leader of Oreburgh, in Oreburgh Mine
  • Trained everyone (main players + HM buddies) before tackling the gym
  • Went straight to Roark with everyone (again, main players + HM buddies)
Roark | Ami (HM buddies will be referred as "buddy" here)
:geodude: | Kaori :zubat:
  • Stealth Rock | Switch to buddy :bidoof:
:geodude: | Buddy :bidoof:
  • Rock Throw (critical hit) | Rock Smash
  • Rock Throw | Potion on buddy :bidoof:
  • Rock Throw | Rock Smash (broke the viola - technically)
:geodude: | Buddy
  • - (broke the cello) | Bubble
:onix: | Buddy
  • Rock Throw | Bubble
  • Potion on :onix: (broke the cello) | Bubble
:cranidos: | Kilza :shinx:
  • Leer | Charge
  • Leer | Spark
  • Headbutt | - (flinched)
  • Pursuit | - (broke the violin right before switching to Kaori :zubat:)
:cranidos: | Kaori :zubat:
  • Leer (broke the cello) | Bite
  • Got the Coal Badge and TM Stealth Rock
  • Bumped into Takumi (again) just when Ami was going to go back to Jubilife City
  • Ran back to Jubilife City (for real)
  • Interfered some Team Galactic grunts from picking on Professor Rowan with Lucas' aid
  • Got a Fashion Case from a random TV crew
  • Made her way to Floaroma Town
Violinist
:shinx: Kilza (Boy)
Level: 14
Ability: Intimidate
Nature: Docile
Moves: Tackle, Leer, Charge, Spark

Violist
:zubat: Kaori (Girl)
Level: 15
Ability: Inner Focus
Nature: Quirky
Moves: Leech Life, Supersonic, Astonish, Bite
  • Okay, I'd say that Roark is no joke even with HM buddies helping out. At least I managed to take on his ace, :cranidos:, with the main squad thanks to it being a pure rock instead of a half-ground like the other two, so :shinx:'s Spark can hit it. That, and (ironically) it doesn't have any rock-type moves which is harmful to :zubat:.
  • I usually refer to the fainting Pokemon as "breaking the instrument" in both my locke and this scramble due to the string sextet theme, and which instrument I talk about depends on the particular Pokemon. For my HM buddies here, I roll with violin for  line and viola for :bidoof: line. Also, in the case of gym leaders (or totems and kahunas in my other run), the instrument in question depends on their specialties.
  • Speaking of the HM buddies, I'm planning to keep training them until they evolve. Why? Because  and :bibarel: can learn more HMs than  and :bidoof:, respectively.

@Pendraflare yeah, I was quite thankful there, especially for the fact that not all of Roark's Pokemon are half-ground (unlike Brock). :mrgreenazurill:
  • Got Icelandic the violist :kricketot: boy at Route 204
  • Fended two Galactic grunts off by herself
  • Icelandic :kricketot: evolved into :kricketune: right after fighting the grunts
  • Kilza :shinx: evolved into :luxio: during Icelandic :kricketune:'s training and :shellos: :shelloseast: hunting
  • Got Moxie the violinist :shellos: boy outside Valley Windworks
  • Broke into the windworks, took down more Galactic grunts in there, and fought one of their commanders, Mars
Mars | Ami
:zubat: | Moxie :shellos:
  • Bite | Switch to Kilza :luxio:
:zubat: | Kilza :luxio:
  • - (broke the viola) | Spark
:purugly: | Moxie :shellos:
  • Fake Out | - (flinched)
  • Scratch | Mud Bomb
  • Scratch | Switch to Kaori :zubat:
:purugly: | Kaori :zubat:
  • Scratch | Bite
  • Faint Attack (or Feint Attack?) | Switch to Kilza :luxio:
:purugly: | Kilza :luxio:
  • Scratch | Charge
  • Scratch | Spark
  • Faint Attack | Super Potion on Kilza :luxio:
  • Scratch | Tackle
  • Scratch (broke the viola) | Spark
  • Went through Route 205 all the way to Eterna Forest
  • Trod her way through Eterna Forest with Cheryl and trained everyone while there
  • Arrived at Eterna City and bumped into Takumi for the n-th time (I don't bother counting that tbh)
  • Bumped into Cynthia who gave her the HM Cut
  • Got an Explorer Kit from the Underground Man
  • Went underground and start digging for stuffs, eventually getting a Skull Fossil
  • Backtracked to Oreburgh City to revive the Skull Fossil into Calaf the cellist :cranidos: boy
  • Spent a night in that one house near Eterna Forest

Whew, :cranidos: battling may be tough, but :cranidos: hunting is even tougher especially for an emulator user like me. I normally use no$gba (and by extension, no$zoomer) for the gameplay, but I had to switch to DeSmuME for the Underground hunt because no$gba (and no$zoomer) can't take me there. That, and it took me quite some time for the hunt itself. Still worth it tho. :upsidedownazurill:
And come to think of it, :kricketune:'s stance looks more like a cellist than a viol(in)ist irl, right? :thonkazurill:

Finally, a fair play. :yayazurill:
  • Retraced her way back to Eterna City (+ some training sessions while she's at it)
  • Defeated the ladies in Eterna Gym (mostly thanks to the viola gang: Icelandic :kricketune: and Kaori :zubat:) and managed to reach Gardenia, the gym leader
Gardenia | Ami
:turtwig: | Kaori :zubat:
  • Reflect | Wing Attack
  • Razor Leaf | Wing Attack
  • Super Potion on :turtwig: | Wing Attack
  • Sunny Day | Wing Attack

  • Stun Spore (ate the Sitrus Berry) | Wing Attack
  • Magical Leaf | Wing Attack
  • Super Potion on :roserade: | Wing Attack
  • Magical Leaf (broke the violin) | Wing Attack
  • Got the Forest Badge and TM Grass Knot
  • Snuck into Team Galactic Eterna Building, eventually reaching another commander, Jupiter, who took a Clefairy from the local bike shop owner
Jupiter | Ami
:zubat: | Kilza :luxio:
  • - (broke the viola) | Spark
:skuntank: | Moxie :shellos:
  • Night Slash | Mud Bomb (missed)
  • Night Slash | - (broke the violin)
:skuntank: | Calaf :cranidos:
  • Screech | Rock Tomb
  • Night Slash | Take Down (missed, broke the cello)
:skuntank: | Kilza :luxio:
  • Night Slash (ate the Sitrus Berry) | Spark (critical hit)
  • Night Slash | Spark
  • - (broke the viola) | Spark
  • Got an egg from Cynthia (it's not like Ami gonna hatch it, though)
  • Got a free bike from the bike shop owner for rescuing him and his Clefairy
  • Tried out her free bike at Route 206 a.k.a. the Cycling Road

Finally, a fair play. :yayazurill: No, really, I finally ditched the HM buddies for my gym battle. And surprisingly, seems like I got super lucky with the viola gang recently, both here and in my locke. Why? Because this gym is quite a breeze with them. :kricketune: may be quite underrated, but mine did a good job with Gardenia's :cherrimsunshine:. And :zubat:, who's famous for being such an annoyance in the trips through the caves, managed to annoy both her :turtwig: and :roserade: big time. As for the other run, well, spoiler ahoy. :cheekyazurill:
I defeated Totem :araquanid: with the violists, specifically :charjabug: and :golbat: (who immediately evolved into :crobat: after the battle). That being said, it's safe to say that the :zubat: line became my MVPs in both Sinnoh and Alola.
As for the commander battle, well, it was tough. :luxio: did one-shot Jupiter's :zubat:, but that one :skuntank: was super tough, for it managed to break a violin and a cello from my side. Maybe it's because I was underleveled (her :skuntank: was at level 23 and my squad was around level 20-21), but who knows. :hmmazurill:

Time to get spooked even if it's not Halloween yet. :ninjaazurill:
  • Explored the lower part of Route 206 as well as Wayward Cave
  • Got Typhlosion the cellist :bronzor: in the Wayward Cave
  • Found Mira in the cave and got outta there with her
  • Kaori :zubat: evolved into :golbat:, then again into :crobat: while escorting Mira

  • Stopped by the Berry Master's house at Route 208 for a little bit before entering Hearthome City
  • Got an :eevee: from Bebe, the local admin of Pokemon Storage System (no, Ami's not going to use it right away)
  • Met Ami's mom in the Super Contest Hall who gave her a contest dress
  • Also met the gym leader of Hearthome, Fantina, in the same place
  • Went into the gym and took on the trainers there, eventually reaching Fantina

Oh. My. Round. :misdreavus: line sure is annoying, and Fantina's :mismagius: is no different. Apparently :crobat: was the only thing in my squad that could outspeed the :mismagius:, so I had to rely on it to even get a hit to :mismagius: despite the apparent disadvantage to its Psybeam. That, and I had to sacrifice :kricketune: just to revive :crobat:. I actually hate to do it, though, until I remembered that this is not a Nuzlocke and I didn't specify the revive limit either, so... :pensiveazurill:

Also, about :bronzor:'s name, I actually have a question: is it weird to name a Pokemon after another Pokemon not in its evolutionary line? If it is, I've been thinking of renaming it to either Ben or A_T as soon as I reach the name rater (and only if @Typhlosion is OK with it).

Is this a fighting dojo or a boxing gym? :nanihmmazurill:
  • Explored Solaceon Ruins all the way to the deepest part and got HM Defog there
  • Explored the Lost Tower all the way to the uppermost floor (with buddy 's aid for the floors needing Defog)
  • Went through Route 210, but made a detour to Route 215 due to the :psyduck: blockage
  • Arrived at Veilstone City
  • Training sessions ensued as soon as she got warned about Maylene, Veilstone's gym leader, by the locals
  • Bumped into Lucas and Crasher Wake, Pastoria's gym leader, in front of the Veilstone gym
  • Punched around the punching bags and dealt with Maylene's students there before dealing with the mentor herself

Oh, well, I hate to admit this, but I was pretty underleveled to Maylene's ace, :lucario:, to the point of me randomly (?) switching players. I originally planned to use :kricketune:'s Brick Break, but :lucario:'s Metal Claw was proven to be too much for my :kricketune:, so I tried to switch to :luxio: to get Intimidate to kick in and stupidly switch to :crobat: while assuming that :lucario: would use Bone Rush (it went for Force Palm instead). From that point, I'd say that :luxio: became my :onix:-pected ace (sorry for the bad pun btw). And that aside, kudos to :crobat: for OHKO-ing :meditite: and landing a finishing hit to :machoke: after :bronzor:'s struggle. :mrgreenazurill:

Btw, about the sudden edit, I forgot to record :shellos:'s evolution here. Sorry about that. :pensiveazurill:

Welp, I was so stupid with all those healing spams. Just because I wanted to finish :floatzel: off with :luxray: doesn't mean I had to revive :bronzong: as well, right? :upsidedownazurill:
That aside, :gyarados: was surprisingly easy thanks to :luxray:'s Thunder Fang. :quagsire: was okay, but also annoying with its Yawn. Thankfully, its Water Pulse didn't confuse :bronzong: at all, so it's all good. As for :floatzel:, well, it loves to spam Brine which makes me wonder if it had any other moves at all. That one Brine hits hard, though, hence the healing spams. :thonkazurill:
